LA Angels/San Diego Padres Under 9.5U
We have two teams facing each other that rank in the top 3rd in pitching ERA (SD #3 and LAA #11). Both teams also rank in the bottom 3rd in batting averages (SD #29 and LAA #23). They are playing at Angels stadium which is the 2nd to worst venue for hitting in terms of batting averages. And both teams rank in the bottom 3rd in HRs (SD #28 with 54 HRs and LAA #25 with 59). Both teams struggling offensively.
The Angels just came off a 4 game set with the Royals where they averaged only 3-4 runs a game. Yes, 34 runs against the worst pitching team in the bigs with a team 6.09 ERA and the worst bullpen in the bigs with a 5.05 ERA. And now they face off against the 3rd best pitching team (team and pen) in the league? In their last 8 games, they’ve only scored more than 4 runs in 2 games. And in that span, they’ve only batted as a team over .300 only 3 times. Also, 8 of their last 10 games have gone under the total.
The Pads have also struggled. In their last 10 games, they’ve only scored more than 3 runs 3 times. In that span, they as a team have only batted over .300 3 times.
The Pads send Hensley to the mound tonight where he got tagged for 4 ERs in a little over 3 innings in his last road start. Surprisingly enough, that game still went under the total as again the Pads failed to provide any run support. He also got tagged for 6 ERs in the road start prior to the last and that game barely went over the 8.5 total with 9 total runs. Again no run support. In the other 3 road starts, he’s held his opponents to 1 ER or less and one of those games was a complete game shutout. In his 11 starts this season, the total has only gone over 9 once and has hit the 9 total twice. The Angels have never faced him.
The Angels send Weaver to the mound where he has held his last 5 opponents to 3 ERs or less averaging about 6 innings per game. He has started against the Pads 8 times in his career and he’s held them to 3 ERs or less 6 of those 8 starts. Also, in those 8 starts, he’s held them to 2 ERs or less in 6 of those starts. Last year, he shut them out in a complete game. Of the Pads bats that have any at bats against him, only Blum has had any success against Weaver and he has only 1 hit in his last 6 games and he’s a sub for Castilla or Greene I believe.
Both Hensley and Weaver most likely go 6-7 innings before the pens step in. The Pads have the 3rd best bullpen in terms of ERA with a 3.32 ERA while the Angels have the 13th best at a 4.25 ERA. Over their last 10 games, the Pads pen have only given up 11 ERs in a little over 32 innings of relief equating to a 3.06 ERA. The Angels pen has been even better giving up only 7 ERs in a little over 24 innings of relief equating to a 2.59 ERA. Other than last night’s outing against the Dodgers, the Pads pen has only given up 1 ER or less in the 9 previous games. In the Angels pen last 10 games, they’ve only given up a run in 3 games. It would be safe to say that whatever the starters give up in the first 2/3 of the game is pretty much what the score will be as both pens are pretty stingy in giving up runs.
In today’s matchup, I like the venue, I like Weaver’s applicable history against the Pads, I like how both bats suck, and I love how the pens have been dominating lately, this game should be an ugly and close but low scoring game.
