Boston Red Sox -150 vs. NY Mets
Boston Red Sox/NY Mets Over 9

I think these plays speak for themselves. Red Sox are on fire. Winners of 11 in a row feasting on NL teams and looking to sweep the NL leader Mets tonight. The Red Sox have scored 5 or more runs in their last 10 games and 8 or more runs in 7 of their last 10 games. In their last 10 games they’ve been averaging 8.3 runs per game. Meanwhile, the Mets have only scored 6 runs total in their last 2 games against the Red Sox. In the two games, as a team they are batting an average of 0.188.

Of the Red Sox lineup, 2/3 of their lineup is batting .300 or better in the last 7 games and it’s distributed evenly throughout the lineup.

    Youkillis 0.308
    Loretta 0.450
    Ortiz 0.222
    Ramirez 0.500
    Nixon 0.294
    Varitek 0.176
    Lowell 0.300
    Crisp 0.368
    Gonzalez 0.381

Of the Mets lineup, only the #1-3 batters are batting well over their last 7 games, but as they further down the lineup, the numbers start to tail off.

    Reyes 0.407
    Lo Duca 0.429
    Beltran 0.300
    Delgado 0.278
    Wright 0.238
    Valentin 0.250
    Chavez 0.167
    Castro 0.214
    Milledge 0.176

To beat this hot Red Sox team, you will need to score runs and you can’t do it when half your lineup is struggling to keep their head above water.

The Mets send Glavine to the mound tonight who is having an unbelievable season going 11-2 with a solid 3.33 ERA. The Mets have won his last 10 starts with the most recent brilliant performance from Glavine shutting down the BJs to 1 ER in 7 innings of work. However, prior to that start, Glavine was beginning to struggle a bit as he gave up 4 runs or more in the previous 3 starts and not lasting past the 6 inning in any of those starts. However, the Mets still got the wins in those starts because they outslugged their opponents. They will have to do that again tonight as there is no way the Sox don’t score at least 4-5 runs off Glavine today. It’s one thing to face a NL team with 8 batters, but to face an AL team with 9 batters and are red hot 1-9 to bat is a whole different story. There are 6 Red Sox bats that have faced him in the past and 4 of them are batting over .300 (Loretta, Ramirez, Nixon, and Lowell). Varitek has struggled against Glavine batting only 0.071 against him with 14 at bats and Gonzalez has a respectable 0.280 average against Glavine.

The Red Sox send ace Schilling to the hill tonight who has been solid and consistent lately. He’s held his last 5 opponents to 3 ERs or less. He is 5-0 at home with a 2.79 ERA, .250 OBP and a WHIP of 0.95. He’s coming off a 10 K performance against the Phillies. Of the Mets bats who have faced him in the past, Delgado, Chavez, and Castro are the only one who are batting over .300 against Schilling but that’s only with 3 at bats each so not much of a sample size. Lo Duca is career 0.250 against Schilling with 36 at bats and Beltran is 0 for 7 against Schilling. And these are 2 of the only 3 Mets bats that’s even hitting the ball lately.

I say Glavine gives up 5-6 tonight and Schill give up his normal 2-3. With the way the Sox bats are hitting lately, it’s hard to not like the over the total regardless of who’s on the mound. I also like to over as a way to cover the Red Sox bet because if the Mets somehow find a way to beat the Sox, it would have to be by outslugging the Red Sox. If Sox score 4 runs today, then I can’t lose both bets. In all honesty, it doesn’t even come to that, Sox win in another convincing fashion.

    Seattle Mariners -140 vs.Arizona Diamondbacks

Mariners is probably the quietest hot team in baseball right now. All the hoopla is on the Red Sox, W Sox, and Tiger runs, but the Mariners aren’t getting the same attention after winning 9 of their last 11. The Ms are 15-3 in their last 18 interleague games are 6-2 in this current interleague stint, all on the road btw. They’ve scored 9 runs or more in their last 4 games and 8 runs or more in 7 of their last 10 games. The only 2 games where their offense was held in check was against Peavy at Petco and Lowe at Dodger stadium. Their #2-6 hitters are batting well over .300 in their last 7 games. Here’s how their bats fared in the last 7 games:

    Suzuki 0.269
    Beltre 0.346
    Lopez 0.346
    Ibanez 0.304
    Sexson 0.321
    Johjima 0.524
    Reed 0.222
    Betancourt 0.235

The Dbacks have lost 8 of their last 10 games. They are currently 1-7 in this interleague stint losing to the likes of Tampa Bay and LA Angels who’s bats do not even compare to that of the Ms. The Dbacks bats were beginning to heat up until they were held to 3 runs last night by Hernandez and crew. The major reason for their slide is not offense but rather their pitching. Their pitching staff has given up 6 or more runs in their last 5 games and when your ace gives up 7 ERs to an opponent, there’s not much hope for your pitching staff.

The Ms send Meche to the mound tonight. For the most part of the season, he has been ok but a little inconsistent where he will hold an opponent to 2 runs or less and then follow up giving up 4-5 runs the next start but overall he’s good for keeping the opponent to 2-3 runs. He seems to be coming into form as he has been very solid lately keeping his last 4 opponents to 2 ERs or less. In his last 2 starts, he’s faced 2 NL opponents and held them to 1 ER each. In his last 3 games he’s got an ERA of 1.83 and a WHIP of 1.17. I think this trend continues as playing in a NL format works to his advantage facing 8 batters instead of 9.

The Dbacks counter with Gonzalez number 2 who was very solid in his 1st 3 starts of his 5 starts this season holding his opponents to 2 ERs or less going 6-7 innings a game. But in his last 2 starts, he’s given up 5 and 7 ERs not lasting more that 5 innings in either start. These 2 losses were to AL opponents.

I expect a solid 6-7 inning performance from Meche keeping the Dbacks to 2-3 runs and I see Gonzalez continue to struggle against AL opponents giving up 5-6 runs. If Gonzalez somehow finds a way to keep the game close, the latter part of the game works the Ms advantage. The Ms pen has only given up 8 ERs in their last 9 games over 23 innings of relief. They’ve only given up a run in 4 of their last 9 games. The Dbacks pen, however, is struggling. They’ve given up 25 ERs in their last 10 games over 33 innings of relief. They’ve given up at least a run in 8 of their last 10 games, most notable is last night’s game where they gave up 7 ERs.

I see a Ms sweep here as they have the advantage in all aspects of today’s matchup in starting pitching, batting, and bullpen.
