  • Rant about voilence in films

Maybe I'm getting old but it seems as though movies are losing there storyline in favour of violence these days and it disturbs me.

On the radio they were advertising 'the hills have eyes', so i rent the movie on DVD for me and my lady to sit down and watch. Well, I had no idea how disturbing it was going to be, grapnic, knife, pick axe, burning to death and worst of all graphic rape scenes of a young girl.

The thing is, the film didn't need it, the radio shouldn't be advertising it during the day, I'd like to kick the fuck out of the writer and director of the film for perpetuating such fucked up crap that clearly has an impact on societies behaviour.

It left me really angry and disturbed so I phoned the radio station and left a complaint. For me that level of violence shouldn't be available, I thought they called them 'snuff movies'. The people who write them are sad and messed up.

Further, I think certification needs to be looked at again and possibly raised in most cases :thumbsdow

I agree to a point. Its not the voilence that bothers me. Its the lack of a story line. They can have all the voilence they want, just as long as they dont give up the story line.

I have noticed that as time as passed things have become more acceptable. When I was younger I remember when a rated R movie "might" have the f-bomb in it once or twice and now they use the word incessantly. Movies rated PG-13 used to be fairly tasteful and wouldn't dare cross certain boundaries but now they push the limits as far as they can...

I suppose everyone pushes the limits in all aspects of life but some of them I just don't understand....

I suppose we have all been "conditioned" and as history progresses things will become commonplace that we could have never fathomed......

There just doesn't seem to be anyone taking responsibility anymore, what's next, kids and then babies getting pedophiled in movies, it angers me that no-one is accountable, writers and directors hide behind freedom of expression 'well you don't have to watch it'.

We all know kids get to watch these movies and sooner or later some retard acts them out or at least integrates what they see into their phsyche,

It is a remake of Wes Craven's original version and is directed by Alexandre Aja who is making a name for himself in the gore genre. The film critics can rave about Aja and his French compatriot Gaspar Noe, but to me both are despicable humans who eschew any plot line for gratuitous violence (remember Noe's Irreversible with its 9 minute (yes 540 second) rape scene)? Now who needs that stuff??

Yes now Hollywood is trying to make up for lack of plot w/excessive CGI or shock value such as ultra-violence. :thumbsdow

When I was a little kid we used to watch Nightmare on Elm Street, Silent Night Deadly Night, Slumber Party Massacre, all that stuff. My parents explained to me at a young age that those are just movies and it's not real. Idon't believe for one second that movies or rap music or heavy metal make people violent. People has commited unspeakable acts of violence since the dawn of man. The violence in the media is a reflection of the society. Society is violent, so we have violent movies, music and video games. It's not that we have a violent society because of the movies , music, and video games.

I can see what you saying, its the old form follows function, function follows form

                or

Art imitates life and life imitates art

It works both ways, but for me I'd rather we were more editorial, clearly we are already editorial to a point, which is why the term 'snuff movies' exists.

But for me, people do adopt phsyche from movies so we need to be responsible

                and

Movies don't need that level of gore to get the point accross, it just seemed like the toxic waste dump of some saddo's mind being allowed influence society. They should at least create another category of movie 'sad fucks' that way I'd know to avoid them.

But maybe I'm just getting old

I see what you are saying and agree with you to a point. I think that it is rediculous the way some people blame all violence, and pitfalls of society on the media, and entertainment. (Not that I think any one on this thread is doing this). I do think though, that we have crossed lines that shouldn't have been crossed and things should be re-evaluated, and we should maybe take a step or two back.

Here's an example of how impressionable people are, especially young people. This isn't about violence, but it's about women and what is acceptable as far as looks. My four year old neice, says to me "do you kiss all the girls?" And jokingly I say "yes, all the girls!" and she says "but not the fat ones." At four years of age she's already thiking about fat and skinny. This is what she's learned from tv and magazine covers. That's a little different than violence, but still young people are very impressionable.
