Graphing Calculators

I know I am going to sound like a dork here but I keep hearing these kids at school talk about how they have formulas programmed into their graphing calculators. How in the heck do you do that? I was thinking that I could do it by going to the "y=" section and putting stuff in there but I actually need that function available for a few problems I will be encountering...

I tried looking on Google but I can't seem to find what I am looking for. Any help would be great - oh yeah, it's a TI-83 if that makes any difference....

You can do all kinds of stuff with a graphing calc. Do you have the book? If not get one. You can make graphs and do all kinds of statistical analysis. I havent used one since my freshman year of college and it was a ti-86 so I cant remember exactly how to do it though.

Well that was helpful - no I don't have the book - I know how to make most graphs based off of the equations but what I need is a better way to store formulas in the thing without tying up all of my "y=" parameters...

The worst part is that I need to figure this out before a test tomorrow....

If you just want to store formula's in your calc, all you have to do is hit the PRGM button, then go to NEW, make a new one, and enter all your formula's in using the ALPHA buttons, typing them in manually

if you need to put symbols in, hit 2nd->MATH (TEST), it has equals, less then, greater than, etc

any other symbols you need can be found in 2nd->0 (CATALOG)... the ones I use are at the bottom

using the program functions you can usually enter most equations and simply insert the variables in order to obtain your results.

Bottom line, if your test is tomorrow you're better off learning the equations and how to manually solve them than resorting to programs that do so for you. When you have some downtime you can insert these programs and then make life easier for you in the future!

He's not making a program... he's just using a program to store the formula's in... so all he has to do while he is in his test is hit PRGM->EDIT->then whatever prgm he made and it shows all the formula's

That's pretty much it - I understand how to work the formulas manually I just get some of them backwards at times. I used to know how to do this but I have been out of highschool going on almost 9 years now so I feel like I am starting all over again. Thanks for the help...

That is the hard way of doing it.

You can also permanently store formulas in the TI series and apply them as you assign values to the variables. The Math tutor set mine up for me for 3 lap dances, it was easy after that. Good luck

been doing this since my first math class, sadly the school of business has figured it out, and now hands out their own clac for the test =(

if you're talking about recording formulas that's a different story, anyone can enter text, i'm talking about entering a program that asks you what the variables are; x=,y=, etc. and that will then give you the answer.
many prof's however are wise to this and ask that students empty the TI memory prior to tests.
