  • Nostalgic???? Things your parents ALWAYS said

I am bored - it is late and I was just thinking about things that my folks used to say to me and I was wondering if any of you remember things that your parents used to ALWAYS say..................

One of mine was - when we were hanging inside on a sunny day -

"Go on, get out side and get the stink off ya"

    Anybody got any good ones?????

My grandpop always used to say "thats how you find out who your friends are". I never really understood as a kid what he was talking about but I do now. In hard times or times when you most need a friend or even family is when people will let you down. Those same people that are always your best friend in good times seem to disappear when times are bad. We only have a few true friends and even family members in this life that will stand by you no matter what.

My grandpop also used to tell me over and over that "nothing is free in this life".

He was the most influential male in my life and had a HUGE effect on the person that I am today. It was just me and my mom growing up and had I not had my grandpop as a male figure to look up to, I would have been in alot of trouble.

Sorry to go off subject in your thread. My grandpop passed away 2 years ago and I find myself missing him greatly. You could say I almost feel a little lost without him in this world. It makes me feel better to talk about him to others like this.

Nice one - that is exactly what I meant - I was talking to my own kid about something and I heard myself saying what my folks said to me!!!!!! Because it is just my boy and me, I try to tell him things about my Dad and he LOVES to hear what he would say.

My dad used to also say - Stand for something or you will fall for anything. I think he stole it from Winston Churchill, though.

      Thanks for sharing.

"Life's not fair". Not used in a pesimistic way, more of a realistic truth.

I remember that one well - How about when you are dressed to go out, at the front door, with the car keys and they say "Are you wearing that?"

What the F' was that all about - something to break our confidence?

"Close the door, were you born in a barn?"

"Don't waste food, think about all the starving kids in China."

"If your friends would jump off a bridge, would you do it too?"

"Don't make those ugly faces, what if your face would freeze like that?"

"Always wear clean underwear, what if you were in an accident?"

When I always wished I were older, at various ages, my Mom would always say----"Don't wish your life away." She was right, now, I wish I was younger.

                    "Cleanliness is next to Godliness."

"What if someone had called YOU that name?"

                    "Don't make yourself a nuisance."

"Quit crying, or I'll give you something to cry about."

"If you do that again, I'll make you go get a hickory." That means you go out and get a switch off a bush so she/he can "stripe your legs" with it.

"Make new friends and keep the old, one is silver and the other is gold."

"Idle hands are the Devil's workshop."

"What if I weren't around anymore, what would you do then?" Or, "I'm not going to be around forever."

"If you do that one more time------."

"Why in the world would you do something like that?" Or, "Why in the world would you say something like that?"

"Don't wear those clothes outside to play."

"Don't sit so close to the TV, it'll ruin your eyes."

"Get in the house, it's raining." Basically saying I didn't have enough sense to get out of the rain, which was true sometimes, lol.

                    "Smoking will stunt your growth."

"There's a storm coming, go get on the bed."

"Your new friend is going to wind up in prison one day."

                    "Money doesn't grow on trees."

"Do you think I'm made out of money?"

                    "Quit hitting your sister."

                    "Chew your food."

"Remember, the Devil is watching you as much as God is."

There were many other things which would be said that weren't original, many of which you probably have already heard:

"A penny saved is a penny earned."

"It takes pennies to make dollars."

"Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise."

"Do unto others." Not the whole phrase, just those three words.

"You can't get blood out of a turnip."

"If you can't say something nice about someone, don't say anything."

"Don't believe anything your hear and only half of what you see."

There's hundreds of others, but I just can't think of any more of them right now. I hope you enjoyed.

                    BB

you know...one of the things my dad said when I was a kid, only once that i remember mind you, stuck with me over the years (thooug he certainly has forgetton saying it)

we were listening to a Billy Joel song in the car and I was about 7 or 8 and I asked if Billy Joel was black, as he 'sounded' black to me, and all my dad answered was 'does it matter?' Funny how such a small moment has really had a lasting impact on me my whole life...

of course he also asked my sister and i regularly if we wanted him to turn the whole damn car arround and go home if we were being bad on our way to anywhere, but especially family vacations :)

ROFL. Yeah buddy, ain't that a bitch? You'd think as old as I am I wouldn't remember anything, lol. But, when you're a kid and you hear those things constantly, you tend to remember them. And to be honest, most did, and do, make sense. Have a good 'en bro. BB
