Couture Spanks Ortiz for Light Heavy Belt

        by Andre Courtemanche

Former Heavyweight and now undisputed Light Heavyweight champion Randy “The Natural” Couture confirmed his place as the greatest warrior in the history of the UFC, and reduced former champion Tito Ortiz to tears of frustration in the process, as he pounded out a dominant five-round unanimous decision (50-44, 50-44, 50-45) in the main event of tonight’s UFC 44 “Undisputed” at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.

        It wasn’t even close.

Ortiz had no answer for the takedowns of the accomplished wrestler Couture and found himself flat on his back for most of this impressive beating. The 40-year-old Couture would use his usual mix of elbows, punches and knees to the body to humble the formidable Ortiz, and even spanked him, literally, near the conclusion of the final round.

While Ortiz was able to survive a full-mount in round three and was relatively unmarked at the conclusion of the contest, there was little doubt as to the outcome. “I knew Tito was trying to get me caught up in him trying to knock me out, but I just stuck to my gameplan,” said the jubilant Couture who is now the UFC’s first two-division champion.

Having already taken out the “meat” of the UFC’s Light Heavyweight division, with victories over top contender Chuck Liddell and now former champ Ortiz in his last two outings and with a previous win over well-regarded Vitor Belfort, there would seem to be little left to accomplish for “The Natural,” other than a high-profile unification battle with pulverizing PRIDE champion Vanderlei Silva.

Ortiz, who has been known to publicly humiliate his victims as part of his post-fight conduct, was classy in defeat and even put the belt around the new champion’s waist before exiting the octagon visibly upset. At 28 years of age and having suffered only two defeats in recent memory, both to all-time greats (Couture and Frank Shamrock), if the stigma of being defeated so soundly doesn’t ruin the warrior’s mentality of adrenaline-charged Ortiz, he will almost surely be back.

You're kidding right? I assume you were hoping Ortiz would win? I understand your dissapointment but that brawl between two of the baddest freakin' guys I have ever seen was awesome. Ortiz took so much abuse in that fight and Couture dominated so effectively it had me on the edge of my seat the entire time. Ortiz put the belt on Couture himself, he was so pissed!! That fight rocked I expect Ortiz to train his ass of in wrestling technique and give Couture a real run for his money in the next "Ortiz -vs- Couture".

Oh yeah, big congratulations to Sylvia, my fellow Maine-iac.

Anyway, November 21st UFC 45 Tank Abbot is fighting again!! and that kid who's fighting him obviously has absolutely no clue who he's fighting. "I;m gonna pick him up and drop him, and then pick him up and drop him again" uh...OK

                    This should be fun

I'll be at 46 in person.

Tank Abbot, that guy is a joke. He was cool in the first few because UFC was new and not everybody was as skilled like they are now. I don't know who he is fighting, but if he is from any of the more reputable camps then he will beat Tanks toothless ass!

Yeah, tank got beat by BJJ a couple of times but then he started training in BJJ too, he's certainly not out. I just think that Cabbage kid is kidding himself if he thinks it's gonna be that easy.

I just hope 46 will be in Vegas and not in Atlantic City or I'll be waiting till the next Vegas fights. Were gonna splurge for the decent seats $350.

Yeah, but think about it this way. You're not getting decent seats at a Headline boxing match for less than 5-10G. Luckily for us the UFC fights aren't as big yet.
