i've never heard anything of scientology being a joke on the part of ron hubbard? If you have something to that effect please share!
I've read (and of course I don't remember where) that his explanation was that in a society where money means so much, people will value the teachings more if they have to pay for it. still sounds loopy in my opinion. they are incredibly secretive which easily gets them labelled as a cult (in my opinion a correct term), and they sue anyone who bad-mouths them. on the southpark episode where they make fun of scientology the credits show the names of "bob smith" for everyone (or another such generic name).
