So, what's with them losing to Greece who doesn't have any NBA players on their team and then Greece gets plastered by Spain? Are they really that much better than we are? Don't think so.
What's disappointing is that we didn't even put our best players on the court. Here's the 2006 roster.
Carmelo Anthony
Shane Battier
Chris Bosh
Elton Brand
Kirk Hinrich
Dwight Howard
LeBron James
Antawn Jamison
Joe Johnson
Brad Miller
Chris Paul
Dwyane Wade
With the exception of Carmelo, LeBron and D. Wade, this is far from the best team we could have put together. WTF? Every member of the original Dream Team, except Laetner, were hall-of-famers and most were among the 50 greatest players ever. That group was indeed the best our country had to offer. But Chris Bosh? Brad Miller? Shane Battier? Come on now. Good players no doubt, but the best the USA can bring to the table? Hardly. What about:
Shaqille O'Neal
Tracy McGrady
Kevin Garnett
Kobe Bryant
Allen Iverson
Paul Pierce
Vince Carter
Ben Wallace
Shawn Marion
Chauncey Billups
Marcus Camby
Brevon Knight
Gilbert Arenas
Baron Davis
Jason Kidd
Some of these guys are on the national team, but didn't play for the World Championship. Why? Some of our best players aren't even on the national team. It's embarassing losing to a team like Greece or any country for that matter. Granted, some of these guys may have been injured and some are getting old, but they still have far more experience than the guys we sent and they're still the best in the game at what they do. We were missing the league's leaders in every goddamn catagory. Well, Steve Nash is Canadian so he doesn't count.
Come on now, who's gonna keep Wallace off the boards? Who's gonna keep Shaq out of the paint? Who in the entire world can match up with Garnett or Bryant or Pierce? Billups, Knight, Davis or Kidd at point guard and who the hell is gonna stop em? It's embarassing.
