He is definitely a dick. That matchup last night between Weaver and Rogers showcased two head cases.
It seems MLB wants to take the high road on this one. Obviously, he was guilty and probably deserves a suspension, but unless you can confirm the substance, I don't think you can do anything.

I think he's an F-ing cheater, and should be suspended. You have to remember- they didn't show Weaver w/ anything on his hand, and it was butt ass cold that night in Detroit. It was 100% pine tar so Rogers could grip the ball better. Dirt doesn't have that yellowish color to it. Isn't it ironic that Rogers had such great control of the ball, and Weaver at times had none?? I'm sure many pitchers use pine tar on their hands, but you don't have to make it so obvious.
And, the fact that Leyland's story of not noticing anything, and Rogers story of saying it was dirt !?!?!, that right there shows something very shady. If the manager and the pitcher can't get their stories to jive, then it's an obvious indicator of guilt.
However now, the Tigers have a serious cloud hanging over their head with all of this controversy. Even if they do win the World Series, it won't be as well deserved or as "earned" as it would be w/ a championship w/ out this type of spectacle.
I can't wait for tonight's game in STL to see what sort of stunts the fans will come up with....The best fans in baseball don't stand for cheaters!

Weaver actually isn't so much a head case. The three previous games he pitched were GEMS. I think Weaver was frustrated at what control Rogers had....but we all know why now.Originally posted by SonofBoneHe is definitely a dick. I can't stand Kenny Rogers. He's as arrogant as they come.
As for the suspension, it's true that right now MLB can't prove it, but the cameras don't lie. Larussa said he alerted the umpires, and they took it from there.

Fair enough - anyone else...Originally posted by redsquirrelHere's how I explain it: he put the pine tar somewhere else. Isn't it weird that every time he went to grip the ball, the first place he went was right under the bill of his hat? So, it's the only inning that the cameras picked something up on his hand

AND for that matter, here is what the St. Louis Post had on their website today:
...."Rather than ask umpires to "undress" Rogers after being told that the pitcher was working with a foreign material on his hand, La Russa sought only to have it wiped away. Rogers did so after the first inning, though a stain appeared to remain on his hand for the rest of his eight-inning appearance.
"There is room for people to handle it differently," said La Russa, who lost reliever Julian Tavarez to a suspension for using a tacky substance last season. "All I know is it's consistent with my view since I've started managing. I'm comfortable with it."

This is quite interesting as well...another exerpt:
"I don't believe it was dirt. It didn't look like dirt," said La Russa, who scrutinized a ball taken out of Sunday's game before passing it to a club employee for safekeeping. La Russa would not say if the club planned to hand over the ball to baseball officials as evidence, saying only, "I've put last night's game behind us."
Rogers, who offered an inconsistent defense following his eight shutout innings Sunday, disputed claims that he washed his hands after the Cardinals complained about his discolored hand. "I didn't wash my hands," said Rogers, who is 3-0 this postseason with 23 shutout innings. "I wiped them off. If they want to make it an issue, they can. But it's not an issue."
Where is that baseball?

Don't get me wrong...Weaver has good stuff, BUT if and once you get to him, he goes nuts. He lets his head get in the way of his stuff. It happened routinely when he was with the Dodgers.Originally posted by redsquirrelWeaver actually isn't so much a head case. The three previous games he pitched were GEMS. His brother on the other hand, Jared, tore it up this year.
I agree the cameras don't lie. I just wish the St. Louis dugout would've figured it out while he was on the mound. Too bad they weren't alerted until after the inning was over. I've hated Kenny Rogers since that reporter incident last year and wouldn't feel bad if he died this very moment. I know that is harsh but honest.

Damn - I forgot just how feisty you can be - I like it :P...
I read somewhere last night that LaRussa and the manager for the Tigers go way back so neither one of them wants to drag the other's team through the mud - I don't think LaRussa would dismiss this quite so easily if it was going to keep his team from winning the Series though - he just doesn't seem the type....

Yeah, something about he used to be a scout for the Cardinals. So, he probably knows some of their "tricks". The thing is that many pitchers use pine tar to get a grip on the ball, yes, even Cardinal pitchers. Using pine tar to improve your grip on the ball as a pitcher isn't cheating. It was stupid, though, to leave a huge gob of it on his hand.Originally posted by fog_hat1981I read somewhere last night that LaRussa and the manager for the Tigers go way back so neither one of them wants to drag the other's team through the mud - I don't think LaRussa would dismiss this quite so easily if it was going to keep his team from winning the Series though - he just doesn't seem the type....

You heard correctly....LaRussa and Leyland are very good friends. However, in a press conference w/ LaRussa, he made the comment that he took it as a personal insult to be lied to by a "former friend"...referring to Leyland.
Who knows how much effect the pine tar incident had on Rogers. It would help ANY pitcher grip it better when it's that cold, though.
SOB- The Cards did figure it out during the 1st inning, and that's why Rogers wiped his hand off. What I don't understand is, this happened w/Julian Tavarez. And Julian Tavarez was ejected for having tar on his hat. Why didn't they treat Rogers the same way? How can the Tigers feel that they won the game fair and square after all of this?
I'm really anxious to see how the umps call the game tonight....
