Here is a link to the rules for a pitcher:Originally posted by babybluesAren't pitchers allowed to have a resin bag on the mound?
MLB rulebook relating to pitchers
Of particular interest:
"Rule 8.02(a) Comment: If at any time the ball hits the rosin bag it is in play. In the case of rain or wet field, the umpire may instruct the pitcher to carry the rosin bag in his hip pocket. A pitcher may use the rosin bag for the purpose of applying rosin to his bare hand or hands. Neither the pitcher nor any other player shall dust the ball with the rosin bag; neither shall the pitcher nor any other player be permitted to apply rosin from the bag to his glove or dust any part of his uniform with the rosin bag.
(b) Have on his person, or in his possession, any foreign substance. For such infraction of this section (b) the penalty shall be immediate ejection from the game. In addition, the pitcher shall be suspended automatically for 10 games.
""PENALTY: For violation of any part of Rules 8.02(a)(2) through (6):(a) The pitcher shall be ejected immediately from the game and shall be suspended automatically for 10 games."
That being said, his wasn't rosin dust...it was pine tar. The rag you seeing hitters use is much different from the dust that is in the rosin bag. Yes, there is a little tackiness and sap in the bag, but wouldn't cause what was on his hand.
I'm sure a 10 game suspension would've been protested by the player's union and all of that crap, but still wish he would've been busted. Talk about George Brett part deux.

:dunno: Maybe MLB gets to decide when & which rules they'll enforce and which ones they won't. I agree it is unfair.Originally posted by redsquirrelSo, then if the cameras caught it, LaRussa & the Cards caught it, and I'm sure the umps caught it because Rogers "wiped off his hands", then why was the above procedure not followed? Tavarez got ejected, right?
I'd hate to think they're like NASCAR and makeup their rules as they go along.

Don't get me wrong, I think he's a douchebag too, but the thing of it is that whether the rules allow it or not, it's become common practice for pitchers to use pine tar on the mound. Granted, they haven't coated their hands with it like Kenny the tard, but it's become an accepted part of the game. All the coaches know that and the umps know it too. LaRussa saw the smudge on his hand and brought it to the umps attention. He didn't even protest letting him stay in the game. Tavarez was ejected, but the cap he threw into the stands was tested and apparently there was nothing illegal on it. I don't know. The whole thing is weird.
As far as touching the brim of his hat before each pitch. That might be his sign to his catcher that he got the sign or it might just be part of his routine on the mound. I don't know because I haven't watched him pitch that closely. Many pitchers adjust their hats constantly. It's like torrets or something, I swear.

Well, I guess we know where you stand.Originally posted by NYCmitch25Who cares? all pitchers use that shit & LaRussa knows it.
This has to be one the lowest rated World Series. I try to watch it but after a few pitches fuking boring. i ended watching high school football - Bergen Catholic.
I'm sure if it were the Cards & the Yankees you wouldn't think it's so boring. :thumbsdow

Yanks or Mets fans are sore losers. Yankee fans are all pissed off because all that money spent was wasted. Couldn't buy another championship! :thumbsdowOriginally posted by redsquirrelWell, I guess we know where you stand.

Well, the Mets and the Yanks have similarly composed teams. Just because the Mets haven't won shit in years, doesn't mean they didn't try and by a baseball team as the Yanks did. What about Beltran or Delgado? How about Pedro Martiniez?? The Mets have a pretty sizeable payroll.
And for the record- the Mets won their division in 1999 and lost in the NLCS. And in 2000, they went all the way to the World Series, beating the Cardinals at the NLCS. Just a little FYI...looks like they have won some things in years
