  • World's Strongest Man: Genetically Gifted?

I've been watching world's strongest man for most of my life it is what got me into working out. Lately, I have been thinking more and more about wanting to compete in it. My question is; do you think you have to have special genes to be eligible to even think about competing or could an average person train to get that big to compete? I ask this question becasue I am at the age of 22 and would really like to train to compete in this event. After watching I know you have to be tall to even think about competing/winning at least 5'11". I am at 6'3" so I have the height. The question I come back to is the sheer mass, Is it possible to become this big? I know the peak years to compete are 28-32 so I would have 6-7 more years to train but, weighing in at 215bs is nothing when you need to be at least 280, and that's if you are in the condition of Mariusz Pudzianowski, which is clearly rare case, even though I have the same polish heritage.lol. I also wondered do you think these guys take steriods to get this big, I look back to some of the recent winners that are not like most competitors with a large gut,but rather they are in good shape. Basically any info, comments,or opinions anyone has, It would be helpful to hear what you got to say.

i dont think Mariusz Pudzianowski was born that big....he trained his ass off geared towards his sport... u have time on your side and anything is possible...oh yeah you bet your ass they used steroids and what ever else http://power-viking.com/hovedsider/main.html

I guessed on the gear part of it after looking at that website I am actually training and eating right on target, except for the competition specific exercises but I will worry about that when I'm over 250 lol

Yeah...are you strong? Do you have dedication? Do you have the resources or finances to train as much as they do and still survive?

I guess when ask strong you mean physically. I would say I have a good amount of strength and I am not afraid to lift or try to lift something I cannot, But I also believe you need to have mental strength as well, seeing I would have to stay dedicated to this for the next 8-10 years of my life. Also as for resources if you mean money I should have enough to be able to afford what I need in this sport.

Training, diet and chemical enhancements are indeed a must to even get close to these guys. However, much more important, IMHO, IS genetics. You either have exceptional genes or you don't. Not saying that if you train, eat and use the proper supplements, with extreme dedication, you can't be very, very strong. However, the vast majority of these guys are NATURALLY big and strong, and had "superman" strength before they ever lifted anything. These guys are freaks of nature, (not slamming them at all), and are an extremely rare breed. Who knows, you may indeed be one of them, only time will tell. Good luck. BB

I think he was asking more specifically what are your max lifts on squat/bench/deadlift....things of that sort.

I agree with ^, you can definitely reach goals with dedication, hardwork, etc...but these guys all do the dedication, hardwork, etc AND have ridiculous genetics.

I don't kno if i have the genetics but I have only been training for a year and a half and went from 175 to 215, without any kind of supplement, I just started using muscle milk becasue the amount of food I was eating was ridiculous, and this gave me a quick dose of protein. I will continue with this goal and see if it still reasonable in 4 years

Just remember that bigger doesn't always equate with stronger. Pretty impressive gains if it's mostly muscle. Also, there are much better/cheaper protein mixes available than Muscle Milk. BB

I bet most of those guys could bench 300+ and squat/dead 500+ without ever lifting. That's just a guess though. I know that I don't have the genetics for powerlifting/strongman stuff. Bodybuilding maybe, if I woud have kept competing, but not strength stuff. I'm stronger than the average guy off the street but my joints give me problems and I'm not what I would consider strong for my size.

Yep I am the same. I was not born to power lift. I can not bench more than 275 to save my life, I mean I get a great pump but just like Control my joints kill me for days after the workout.

I have always been stronger than normal thats why I had this Notion to start training for it, I also have started buying muslce milk becasue I have not seen any type of gains like I have been getting from muslce milk than other types of protein powder, It maybe be a combination from my revised diet , but I am up to 220, I have been going up in my body weight, I beleive it is 99% muscle because I can still see my abs and I really lost no definition, I was thinking about gear, but not until my normal weight gaining stops, I really understand now about natural body abilities, But my whoel family was like this when they hit their early twenties they all started growing big, my father was 6'4" 280 and went to the raiders training camp but had a knee injury so gave up, and my uncle was 5'11" 275 and used to pick up smallblock v-8's when he was in his early twenties only reason I beleive this is because of a picture I saw, only downside is every man on that side died in their fifties, so who knows I figure go for this while I got the chance.

The thing about mariusz that seperates him from the field is that he stays lean and trains for endurance as well. Keeping the body fat percentage low and train heavy for lots of reps is what keeps him able to dominate the field.
