No getting a good job or a higher education is certainly not pompous, but telling people they need these things after they make a joke (or a few months worth of jokes, lol) is...imo.

That's what people usually end up messing w/you about. Like when you tell a story about something you've done or recently purchased and you have to include the price of everything. It's not necessary and comes off as if you are trying to impress people. You've heard this a thousand times so I'm not going go on, but you get the point.
