CAROLINA PANTHERS -2.5 @ PHILADELPHIA EAGLES
Carolina (6-5, 2-3 away) at Philadelphia (5-6, 3-3 home) @ 8:30 PM. EST. *ESPN
The Carolina Panthers and Philadelphia Eagles will not be able to hide their problems from the world on Monday night, as a national primetime audience watches the two injury-plagued, enigmatic teams face off at Lincoln Financial Field.
The Panthers were projected by many to be a prime Super Bowl contender this season, but have not lived up that billing in a year that has seen starting left tackle Travelle Wharton (knee), center Justin Hartwig (groin), and middle linebacker Dan Morgan (concussion) all succumb to season-ending injuries. Last Sunday, playing without starting running back DeShaun Foster (elbow), Carolina went to Washington and fell to the hapless Redskins, 17-13. The defeat was the third in the last five games for John Fox's team, and dropped the Panthers behind the first-place Saints in the NFC South.
The Eagles' list of season-ending injuries isn't as long as that of the Panthers, but includes more names that are familiar to the general public. Philadelphia quarterback Donovan McNabb was lost for the year with a torn ACL sustained against the Titans in Week 11, joining former Pro Bowl defensive end Jevon Kearse on the list of star Eagles that failed to make it to the month of December. Last week, in the team's first game of the year minus McNabb, Andy Reid's squad sustained a 45-21 loss in Indianapolis that included a 171-yard, four-touchdown effort from Colts rookie running back Joseph Addai.
The Eagles enter Monday night's game having lost five of their last six contests.
SERIES HISTORY
Philadelphia leads the all-time regular season series with Carolina, 3-1, including a 30-8 home rout when the teams last met, at Lincoln Financial Field in Week 6 of the 2004 season. The Panthers' lone regular season victory over Philadelphia was a 33-7 affair in Charlotte during the 1999 campaign.
Carolina's 14-3 road win in the 2003 NFC Championship is the only postseason matchup between the clubs all-time.
Reid is 2-2 against the Panthers in his career, including playoffs, while Carolina's Fox is 1-2 versus the Eagles.
OVERALL ANALYSIS
The Eagles will likely win another game in 2006, but there isn't a great deal of hope that this week will bring that elusive sixth victory. Garcia was efficient last week but can be game-planned against due to his lack of arm strength, meaning the entire offense will probably be on Westbrook's shoulders for most of the game. If Carolina takes away his big plays, it has the formula for beating the Eagles. On the other side of the ball, the Panthers have been moving in fits and starts, but their running game should be able to make some headway against a Philadelphia front seven that seems to get manhandled more often than not. In addition, don't count on the Eagles' Jekyll-and-Hyde secondary to hold down the Delhomme-to-Smith connection for 60 minutes.
