Richard Jeni, a 45-year-old funny man from Brooklyn, died Saturday morning from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound in California.
Jeni was found in his West Hollywood home, according to the Associated Press. His girlfriend made the phone call to the police early Saturday morning saying, “My boyfriend shot himself in the face.” Jeni later died at a nearby hospital.
The comedian was famous for his frequent appearances on the Tonight Show and won the American Comedy Award for Funniest Male Stand-Up Comic in 1993. He also played Jim Carrey’s best friend in the Oscar-nominated hit, The Mask in 1994.
Suicide has not officially been confirmed and an autopsy is scheduled for Monday, Lt. Fred Corral, of the Los Angeles County Coroner's Investigations Division, told the AP.
Jeni’s last televised appearance was in 2006 on the Chris Rock-produced sitcom, Everybody Hates Chris.
