A high school football player, one of his coaches and a professional bodybuilder were among 16 people arrested in a wide-ranging drug sales and manufacturing ring in northern New Jersey, authorities said.

Police said Anthony Cuppari, 24, a volunteer assistant coach and former star running back at Hanover Park High School, and Michael Dente were manufacturing steroids and other drugs in Dente's basement.

Professional bodybuilder Jason Arntz, of South Brunswick, was charged Monday with conspiracy to manufacture steroids. Police said he provided the expertise.

Two other men were charged with supplying drugs to Cuppari and Dente or selling them to others.

Eleven other people were accused of buying the drugs. Among them was a 17-year-old player on the Hanover Park team. His name was not released because of his age.

In a series of raids and arrests between Friday and Sunday, police said they seized more than $20,000 in cash, a pill press and other drug manufacturing equipment, ingredients to make 35,000 doses of steroids, a dozen vehicles, $200,000 worth of weapons and a slew of drugs, including steroids, cocaine, marijuana and Cialis.

Cuppari and Dente were also accused of manufacturing gamma hydroxybuterate (GHB), known as a "date rape" drug, but also used by bodybuilders to counteract the side effects of steroids, such as trouble sleeping and anger.

Morris County Prosecutor Michael M. Rubbinaccio said their lab was "fully functional." Authorities also said they were planning to start making painkillers oxycondone and Percocet, as well as Cialis, which is used to treat erectile dysfunction.

Ben Dente, who shares a house with his son Michael Dente, said police had at least part of their story wrong.

"It's all BS. There's no manufacturing here," he told the Star-Ledger of Newark for Tuesday's newspapers. "It's not a factory and there was no buying or selling in my house."

This school year, New Jersey began random steroid testing of selected high school athletic teams. It is not known whether Hanover Park's football team was among them. The New Jersey Interscholastic Athletic Association said all the tests from last fall were negative.

Anyone that sells steroids especially in New Jersey is a dumb ass. The drug laws in Jersey and NYC are far more strict than any other state.

So, the focus of this article was a steroid bust while these guys had weapons along with cocaine and marijuana. I would think that steroids are the least of those offenses. And what exactly is a drill press used for in making drugs. :laughnew:

You put a whisker or a mixing paddle on it and you can whip up some good 'ol steroid batter.
