I have been watching the Pittsburgh v. Ottawa series and noticed that Ottawa's goalie (Ray Emery) is black.

there aren't a lot, that is for sure...there are some asians and a few black players. Most of the minority players are Canadian, however, and are from middle class or above incomes as hockey is prohibitively expensive for anyone, regardless of colour, if they aren't making a good income.

Very true. You're looking at a couple hundred for skates, 400 for other equipment, and you can't get a decent stick for under 75 anymore. And I'm talking about VERY MODERATE quality equimpment at those prices.Originally posted by mindstarhockey is prohibitively expensive for anyone, regardless of colour, if they aren't making a good income.
Add in the 300-500 bucks to register for hockey, then the gas money it takes when you play on a rep team that plays against other cities, then the motel costs when you do tournaments out of town....it adds up fast.
My younger brother played all the way up to junior, and always played on high level rep teams, so he always had top quality equipment. Just off the top of my head, I can remember him playing with:
275 dollar sticks (Synergy SiCore)
600 dollar skates
200 dollar shoulder pads
170 dollar pants
150 dollar shin pads
200 dollar gloves
130 dollar helmet
125 dollar elbow pads
So yeah, the odds are that if your parents aren't making good money, you're not going to see the elite levels of minor hockey, much less get anywhere close to the level that the NHL drafts from.
