MANCHESTER – For years, Mirko Cro Cop had knocked opponents out in devastating fashion with fearsome kicks to the head. Tonight, before a packed house at the MEN Arena, Gabriel Gonzaga gave the Croatian bomber a taste of his own medicine, sending him crashing to defeat with a single right kick to the head in the UFC 70 main event, earning himself a shot at UFC Heavyweight Champion Randy Couture in the process.
“I trained very hard, mentally and physically, for this fight and I was aiming for the knockout,” said Gonzaga, now 8-1. “I had the opportunity and I took it.”
“I’m disappointed,” said Cro Cop, 22-5-2. “I will have to look at the fight and see the mistakes I made.”
Gonzaga came out of his corner determined to fight, and he immediately started tossing out rangefinding punches as he stood in the pocket with the feared striker. Cro Cop took his time while looking for an opening, but when he threw his first big kick to the body, Gonzaga was able to grab his opponent’s leg and take him to the canvas. On the mat, Cro Cop tried to keep his cool in an attempt to force a standup, but Gonzaga would have none of it as he fired away with forearms to the head, one of which opened a cut on the Croatian’s forehead. With 35 seconds left, apparently Cro Cop got a reprieve, but instead, he was sent crashing to the mat with a single right kick to the head at the 4:51 mark, throwing the arena into shock as the next challenger for the heavyweight crown was determined.
“I’m going to do my best to prepare for this fight and I’m going to try and do the same thing again,” said Gonzaga of his future opponent, the legendary Couture.
I bet he has a headache this morning. He got knocked the F out!!! I thought that he broke his ankle after he got knocked out too. Did you see that? Damn!
I watched it all on PPV, it was running concurrent with Cage Rage at Wembly London so I was flicking between the two.
I was shocked, Mirco didn't seem like he gave a shit when he wwalked in the cage, maybe he thought it would be a cake walk. basically after Gonzaga caught Mirco's leg and got the take down Mirco was on his back for most of the round, with seconds till the end of the round herb stood them up. Mirco rushed to get some points and caught caught. The kick was ugly and sounded terrible, it nearly put me off watching MMA ever again as I thought Cro Cop was dead of a brocken neck and his right leg buckled horribly under him. He came round eventually.
It must be so hard when you think you have a couple of fights to get out of the way before a title shot and then that happens. He will come back and win the title so long as Fedor doesn't come and take it first.
I call that luck and in none of the training vids did they show Gonzaga had a head kick so Mirco def wasn't expecting that.
I really hope Mirco is ok and comes back and then after he takes the title from Randy
smashes Gonzaga slowly and painfully!
I didn't see the fight, but was Gonzaga kicking to the body a lot before that kick?
Not really - Cro Crop tried to kick him early in the fight and Gonzaga caught his leg and took him to the ground - elbows and fists to the face of Mirko for quite a bit until it was brought back to their feet - that headshot really came out of nowhere but it was beautiful...
Gonzaga controlled him the entire round, caught his leg for the take down, smashed him repeatedly w/elbows and then landed an intentional devastating kick to the side of his head...I'm not so sure that constitutes luck. I'd lean more the side of 'out performed.'
I felt sorry for Cro Cop when he was laying there on the mat and then standing next to Rogan. He just looked like this once proud man that had lost it all. He truly had the look of defeat when he was walking away.
I'm glad he was walking away after the way he crumbled to the ground. He'll be back. Again, this is why I love this sport...you just never know!

I would say there was some luck in Cro Cop dropping to protect his body instead of his head first. At that level, fighters can usually read kicks better than that...but I guess most don't kick to the head before attacking the body some first.

Seemed to me he walked INTO the ring like he had already been defeated - being calm and collected is one thing but he looked like he just knew it wasn't his night...
