  • How much Television do you think you watch...

On any given day or week about how much TV do you watch (including leaving it on as background "noise")?

I've recently decided I watch way too much TV and have resolved to cut my time in half by the end of this week - just way too much other stuff in life to be exposed to than allowing anything and everything to find its way into my house/mind....

A lot, I always have it on at least in the background. During the regular TV season there are probably around 15 shows I watch each week, plus games and other stuff I find to be interesting at the time.

Haven't turned on the TV in about 6 months. In the last 2 years, I have watched probably a grand total of 3 or 4 hours of TV.

I guess I should clarify my original posting - I don't watch any TELEVISION, OTA or cable. I find very little on television that is intellectually stimulating. I do watch movies every once in a while - occasionally in the theater. More frequently at home, usually stuff for my older son (7 years old).

For example, we recently read together the book version of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, so after finishing the book, we watched the movie (the original Gene Wilder version). Same for Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. Now, we are reading the Wizard of Oz and we will watch the movie in a week or so when we are done with the book. So, I'd say about a movie every 3-4 weeks or so or whatever it takes for me and my son to finish a book taking turns - he reads one page and I read the next.

With kids, most of our activities whether it be movies or trips or whatever involve them in some way, so I haven't done too many purely "adult-oriented" stuff in a while.

I'm not a big fan or R-rated movies - violence, nudity, etc. I have reached a point in my life where I have achieved a certain calm peaceful state in my interaction with the world - nothing perturbs me too much in any negative emotional direction and I find that most R-rated stuff generally upsets this mental state that I want to maintain.

Sorry for going all new-agey here, but I'm an old fogey guys, lol.... I'll be 41 in September. When I was a young 'un like most of you are, I used to watch more movies than I do today but tastes change over time and as Popeye says, "I yam what I yam."

agree and disagree. there is a ton of BS on tv, i can agree with that. but there are countless shows on the history channel, science channel, discovery, and so on that even a smart guy like you could learn from. these channels are 99.9% of my tv watching.

No question - there is a lot of good stuff on TV like you mention. In fact the few hours of TV I did watch is based on what you posted a few months ago regarding the Amazing Earth or whatever the show is called on the Discovery Channel - that was some pretty amazing cinematography.

It all boils down to time management - I come home from work at about 6 and have about 3 hours before the kids go to bed, so that time is spent with the kids. After getting them to bed, I have about 2 hours or so before I go to bed. The choices are TV or a book or just me and the wife relaxing and talking about stuff. Usually the latter two take precedence over TV.

What do you do in the mornings when you're getting ready for work - do you listen to music or just talk to your wife/kids or what? Do you listen to music in the car etc? Are you at work now?

I usually wake up around 5am, take a shower. Most days I do some yoga or meditation for some time - sometimes I read. Maybe log in to work, check my mail and get prepared for the day. My wife is usually up around the same time too, so she usually does the same thing. Sometimes we talk but mostly each of us is getting ready for the day. Kids wake up around 6:45 or the next half hour is spent getting them into the shower and dressed. I then take the train at 7:30am to go to work and get there at 8:00am. I usually read books on the train and when on the elliptical trainer in the gym - usually can get about 50-60 pages read a day. I listen to music at work if I am at my desk but not much - I typically play piano more than I listen every day.

And yes, I am at work now. I usually have a few chances a day to fire up a browser and see whats happening on my favorite forums :)

I watch more than I probably should (although who's to say?). I prefer movies over TV - but when I watch TV I like documentary stuff. Not necessarily educational, but "real"...
