  • Canada Has the Most Pot Smokers in Industrialized World

    http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,288846,00.html

    Canada ranks fifth worldwide when it comes to marijuana usage, but ranks first among industrialized nations, according to the 2007 World Drug Report.

    About 16.8 percent of Canadians ages 15 to 64 light up, compared to 12.6 percent of Americans in the same age bracket, according to the report. Canada’s usage is about four times the worldwide average of 3.8 percent, while the United States' usage is about three times the average.

    Marijuana, or cannabis, remains the most commonly used drug in the world with almost 160 million people ages 15 to 64 using it in 2005, said the report, which was put out by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime. Usage is down slightly from 162 million, according to last year’s World Drug Report, which reviewed data from 2004.

    The majority of it is grown in the Americas (46 percent), followed by Africa (26 percent). Canada’s usage trails behind Papua New Guinea and Micronesia at 29 percent each, Ghana at 21.5 percent, and Zambia at 17.7 percent. Among European nations, Cyprus topped the list at 14.1 percent, followed by Italy and Spain, both at 11.2 percent.

        Still think legalizing it in the US would be smart...

          Not sure about "smart" - they do still have to look out for everyones best interest...

          Did you watch "In Pot We Trust"?

              It was on HBO the other night - I caught the end of it. It was basically about trying to legalize marijuana for medicinal purposes.

                  they've basically don't that here in the UK, they have pushed down its listing to class B or C or something which basically means you can't be arrested for possession.

                  As a result the strain of resin and weed, scunk is now like 8 times stronger than it used to be, many are growing it themselves under UV lights.

                  Problem is that there is now significant medical proof that canabis causes personality disorders and has been linked to scitzophrenia. Thats not good and the problem is that everyone now thinks its ok. BAD MOVE IMO

                  It might dull you senses in the short term but it does the opposite over time as above. All my freinds that have used it for a term have done nothing with their lives and became anti social until they kicked it. SHITE MED

                            Yes I have; NYC, Two points;

                            1) If you're saying that the stats are higher in US because Cannabis is illegal, I dissagree, if Cannabis were legal then those same dealers etc would be dealing something else and the same trouble would occur.

                            2) If your saying that if everyone smoked pot, we would all be chilled and there wouldn't be as much violence, I don't accept that either and many medical studies would support that

                            I have been to Amsterdam and IMO its not example, and one more thing, statistics are a funny thing. You have to recognise the crime, i.e. have a system where people feel confident in the police and legal system before people will report it.

                            What I can say is that Cannabis is basically legal (in that its not illegal for personal use/possession) here in the UK, since some while ago. I don't think that was a good move for society I think it sends the wrong message.

                            Truth is police didn't chase it down as much as harder drugs before that anyway so why the change I don't know, maybe 'new labour' trying to get in tough with the younger voter, I don't know. But its going to be difficult to straighten out now since these medical reports link it with scitzophrenia and its basically been legalised.
