  • Man In Killed In 100 MPH Sports Car Crash On NJ Turnpike

NEWARK, N.J. -- One man was dead and another critically injured Thursday after a Dodge Viper collided with a tractor-trailer and disintegrated on the New Jersey Turnpike, authorities said.

New Jersey Turnpike Authority spokesman Joe Orlando said the sports car was traveling well over 100 mph when it hit the truck in Newark around 4 a.m.

The two victims were in the car.

The southbound lanes around Exit 13A were closed for several hours, but were mostly open later in the day, Orlando said.

The injured man was taken to University Hospital in Newark.

Are you serious? 100 mph on relatively open roads, no obstacles, and no mechanincal failures maybe, but 100 mph on the freeway (especially in NJ) anything can happen when someone makes an unexpected lane change and you don't have the space to avoid disaster.

At 4am? They get that much traffic that early? Back in my stupidity days, I did 140mph in a mustang in light traffic. Either or, stupidity pays off in the end.

exit 13A is about 10 minutes from me. Newark Airport is right off that exit. its about 15 minutes from NYC when the turnpike is clear. i doubt there was much traffic but i am sure there was some. either way, 100mph isn't all that fast especially in a performance car like a viper. i have done 115-120mph past that very exit, its a straight shot, no turns etc..

                      Nah...everyone goes 90-100 in NJTP.

regardless, 100mph is still more than fast enough to make it difficult to compensate for the unexpected. I know 100mph isn't some crazy speed. I have a bike I go 170 regularly and I hit 140 in my car more than enough.

I saw a guy in a brand new vette about 3 months ago lose it at 70-80mph because he was trying to swtich lanes and someone else had the exact same idea at the same exact time. he hit the gas (too hard), rocketed out of the lane, tried to counter steer in a short distance and ended up blasting into the center gaurdrail head on. he hit it so frkn hard that he bounced back into the interstate and parts were raining down on my car! I think people look at mph as this arbitrary number and take for granted what can happen very quickly at those speeds.

yeah 100 mph if fine until you loose control, maybe an over reaction when you come round from dozing a bit or something, it doesn't take much of a turn on the wheel to be in the opposite trafic. We get so used to the modern car safety features and precision engineering but once you loose it its a different animal.

I have a rear wheel drive car and you have to respect it
