I've been thinking about buying an old cj5 of cj7 as a toy. Anyone have any advice or anything specific I should be looking for or looking ot avoid?

I owned a 98 wrangler which is the TJ or YJ (I dont remember) and I lifted it about 6 inches and had 38s on it. Best damn car I ever owned, I never had problems with it that werent my own doing. That inline 6 is a great motor. I decided to get rid of when it was pretty beat and bought a cadillac what a dumbass, I miss that thing. I know you're talking about getting the older CJ and unfortunately I dont really have too much experience with them. Why do you want to get a CJ instead of a newer one, they can be pretty bad ass if you do them up right. Plus its so much easier to get parts for them.

The good thing about jeeps in general is that there are endless accessories and parts. This will not be my daily driver and I just like the look of the old cj's. I personally think the cj7 is better than the cj5 (a little bigger). The main reason is that I can get one that is already restored for about 6-10 grand. The newer wranglers are a little more expensive and I just dont want to spend the money for a toy.

I've been going to jeepforums.com for a while now - it's a pretty cool site and it's laid out really well - forums are set up almost perfectly and most everyone is cool/respectful (plus people aren't nearly as discreet/secretive as they aren't discussing things like we do here so it gives it a much different feel)...
I've got an '06 TJ which is gonna get 16x10 Mickey Thompson Classics with Beadlocks, 35" MT Baja Radials and a 4.5" Skyjacker lift setup in the near future - it should be sweet ;)....
