In case you didn't hear this today:

Earnhardt Jr. Won't Retain No. 8 in Move to New Team

    Thursday, August 16, 2007; E02

Dale Earnhardt Jr. will not be taking his familiar No. 8 with him to Hendrick Motorsports next season.

Earnhardt is leaving Dale Earnhardt Inc. at the end of the season and had hoped to take No. 8 with him to his new team. His late grandfather, Ralph, used that number and Earnhardt picked it when he entered the Cup Series in 1999. Earnhardt's father used No. 8 early in his career.

Although teams do not own numbers -- they are leased through NASCAR -- DEI had the first right of refusal, and Hendrick officials said yesterday they were unable to reach an agreement that would have made DEI pass on choosing the number for 2008.

Hendrick officials didn't reveal what number Earnhardt will use when he starts his five-year deal with the team in 2008. His sponsor has also not been announced, but Hendrick officials said Budweiser will not be on his car.

Being the resident Alabamian.....Jr moved teams because DEI wouldn't provide the testing equipment needed to be competitive enough to win a championship. Above all else that's what Jr wants. So he is going to Hendrick, where the have 2 guys that dominate the sport. Bottom line is that Theresa Earndhardt (Dale Sr's wife) wouldn't let go of the number for sales purposes. It's too valuable. The same reason why Budweiser won't be his main sponsor next year.

Ha Ha. Classic Jersey. I love it!!!

If you ever get the chance to go to a race, do it. It's boring :thumbsdow to watch on TV, but dude, hearing and watching 30 cars come blasting past you all in a pack at 180mph is something else. You don't realize how fast those guys are going or just how loud it is until you're there. You can actually feel it in your chest. Pretty intense. Come on...you know you want to. :D

His step mother owns DEI. She knows and cares nothing about the company. She doesn't even go to the races. DEI will go to shit because of her. Why the fuck Sr. left the company to her rather than Jr. is beyond me.

I don't see how Theresa or Budweiser is going to make nay money off the #8 next year. No one really cares about that, they are EARNHARDT fans and their loyalty will follow.

So Theresa would only want to let Dale drive the #8 if she got a piece of the money. Dale didn't want any ties to DEI what so ever. I am curious if he will be back in the #8 after one year of it just sitting there.

I'm going to have to assume he was a pussy whipped moron. There's no way a lawyer would have advised him to leave it to the missus, who knows jack squat about NASCAR.

It could have been that it wasn't really set up to go to anyone and Theresa just inherited it.

I suppose that's possible...but highly unlikely, given the value of the company and the dangerous nature of racing. If it did happen like that, it's only because Dale Sr. refused to listen to his lawyers, who would surely have pressured him to 'make arrangements' just in case.
