  • Computer Upgrading question

I got a question concerning upgrading my operating system. Im currently using Window Me, which sucks big time because of its errors. Everytime we get some new software it is not compatible with our operating system, it either requires XP, 2000, Vista, or higher. My question was, I've had this computer since Sept 2001. I wanted to know if anyone know how to upgrade it.

I want to go and buy the XP upgrade disk tomorrow at stores where they sell them at. If so, is the process hard. Will I lose the info I got on my hard drive. Cause me and my sistes got plenty of info here and school materials, dont wanna lose any data.

Just wondering if anyones ever upgraded their computer operating system.

Me is the worst Windows ever made, Xp would be the most user friendly, Vista has alot more features but if your used to Me it might take a while to get used to. All you have to do is save all your Data onto disk, and install the new Windows

yeah i was told a long time ago that it sucked and had major errors on it. Im looking at XP, hopefully tomorrow go to Best Buy in the morning and talk to the Geek Squad. I was going through the windows.com or microsoft.com and the step by step process.

its cause i bought a new printer earlier. Thing was it was not compatible with my computer. So I returned it, so got another one. It said it was compatible with Me but when I tried installing it, it didnt work. The printer turns on and all, but i cannot download anything from the disk. So Im stuck here, but in reality the computer does need an upgrade.

hell man, you can get a brand new desktop computer for like $250 from dell. i would do that. your computer is almost 8 years old, that is OLD in the computer world.

At the end of the year I upgraded my old system, (1998) to XP because I couldn't use the newest version or Turbotax with win 98, the OS had on the system. There is a compatiblity test you can run from Microsoft that will identify what will and won't work with XP for software/hardware you currently have on your system. The main thing is if your processor is fast enough for XP. I assume it is being it's a 2001 model. Minuimum processor is Pentium @ 233MZ, which mine was and it runs OK, but I wish it were a bit faster. I can't remember the memory requirements, but I'm sure you'll have enough.

Best buy and other retail stores is NOT the place to buy XP pro, or home edition. I bought XP Pro online, (can't remember where for $129.00). If you buy it locally, your going to pay a bunch more than that. Whatever you buy, make sure it has the SP2, (service packs).

Like Bouncer said, for twice what you pay for the XP software, you can get a decent system. I don't know if your into "gaming", you'll have to spend a bit more for processor speed and video card speed though. But, if you only want it for casual PC stuff at home, an inexpensive one will do fine.

Here's a link that will give you more info on an upgrade. Just make sure you backup anything you want to keep before you upgrade, as your data file will be wiped out when you do the upgrade. Good luck. BB

I agree with what Bouncer said...get a new computer, and just transfer all the stuff you want to keep from the old one. It's not worth trying to upgrade a system that old.

update, i bought the XP today and installed it. So far so good, liking it. The installation was not a big problem only that it took a while, so it was all patience. Ya the new printer worked, for once get to use the USB drives.

Im also going to buy a new one, wanna look into the Dell's like u all mentioned. I need another one soon within the month or two. I was looking around at the store for Desktops, they looked alrighty but wanna check out the Dells.

mine is a dell , dell does everything cheaper. If i had of bought my laptop in stores i would of paid near $3000 (aud) but with dell your dealing direct with the manufacturer so i only paid half that
