I always loved it, but I can see why you felt differently being in a city where it trick or treating might be dangerous. I've lived most of my life in a city of 22,000 people, where poisoned candy isn't an issue. Policing is heavy on halloween, and there are tons of extra parent volunteers and law&security students out patroling, so it's very safe for kids to go out and get a pillow case full of candy.
That's right, a pillow case FULL. One halloween, my last one where I went out for the purpose of getting candy, I remember going out with three friends with a maximum candy strategy. We were in a pretty dense population area of the city...went running from house to house as fast as we could til we hit them all. Then we changed costumes, using old masks we'd used in previous years. Did the whole circuit again. Another change of mask and clothes, then did the circuit a third time. I filled over two pillow cases. It was a ridiculous haul...took me at least 6 weeks to eat the candy...and I had so damn much, I actually gave a lot to my little sister (that should tell you just how much I had...LOL).
