  • Apocalypto!!!

I saw some previews for this movie a while back and then never heard much so I assumed it sucked. I just saw it last night on Showtime ON Demand and even though I'm not a big Mel Gibson fan this movie was badass. If you get the chance to see it on TV or rent it I definately recommend it. Good ass ending too. The whole thing is in subtitles but I got so into the movie I didnt even realize I was reading after like 15 minutes.

This film is a colossal misrepresentation of the nature of the Mayan civilization. A number of Mesoamerican scholars have come out with criticism of the liberties Gibson has taken with the facts of how the Mayans lived, how violent they were, how many slaves they had, etc. There is no evidence for a lot of the negative things that are portrayed in the movie. While it may be a a barnburner at the box office, it is unfortunate that Gibson has done so while running roughshod over the truth.

Moreover, Gibson is an anti-Semite. I for one refuse to put a dime in the pocket of anyone who espouses such despicable ideas.

Based on what?! Reports of an anti-semitic tirade when he was arrested for drunk driving? Come on, now. Of course, everything someone says while under the influence of alcohol is to be taken at face value. Have you ever said something sarcastically that has been taken literally? What about Gibson's life would suggest that he is anti-semitic? Let's see, Gibson is a Catholic and he directed and produced a movie about Jesus Christ that was a barn burner. He did a pretty good job with that one. The only anti-semitic criticism that movie garnered came in the form of the Jewish community accusing him of saying the Jews killed Christ. Well, if that's what history says, than that's what history says. Dispite repeated public apologies for his comments and reassurances that he is not anti-semitic, people are still ready to believe the worst. I believe it was you who said, "you're going to believe what you want to believe". We all have our blind spots.

As far as the movie goes, I thought it was a great movie. Did it stick to history? No. Was it a historical documentary? No. It was a movie; just a story and should be taken as such.

That certainly doesn't make Mel anti-semitic.

I don't agree. We can't condemn the guy based ,in part, on sentiments his father espoused.

I wouldn't know because I've never been drunk. I've never even had a sip of alcohol for that very reason. I've been around some of my friends when they were drunk and some pretty stupid things came out of their mouths that I don't think were representative of what went on in their head. People say alot of things when their mad that they don't mean. Alcohol just removes the filter that normally prevents people from saying those things.

Alcohol has a way of loosening views and opinions from the deepest recesses of one's brain and bring them front and center for everyone to see. So contrary to dismissing Gibson's drunk Anti-Semitic tirade as an aberration, I posit that it something that he truly believes in and just happened to pop out in an unguarded moment. It cannot be conveniently explained away in contrite talk show appearances after the fact.

I've been ripping mad at people before and said some pretty horrible things. They were not things that I really believed were true, but I said them because I was furious. Anger has an effect similar to alcohol in that respect. It can remove inhibitions and cause us to let down our guard. We're all subject to passions and furies that can control us if we're not careful. The combination of alcohol and anger can be destructive. I don't believe that every whim or thought that passes through out minds is indicative of our character. Our character is determined by what we do with those thoughts and attitudes. We have to be able to dismiss improper thoughts and attitudes before they boil to the surface. We're not always successful in controlling them, but that's because we're all human. I'm just saying.

Edit: I also believe in second chances. I guess because I've needed a few in my time.

Not really, but I do know what it's like to say something stupid and then have that become the definition of my character. That's not right.

                        EXACTLY.

The canard that Jews are somehow collectively responsible for some form of evil or another is what has driven anti-Semitism through the millenia. It led them to be persecuted in the dark ages, to the pogroms in eastern Europe and culminated in the Holocaust. Even today, we can't get past this - the notion that there is a Jewish conspiracy of some sort to control one thing or another today - whether it be media, the movies, or whatever.

Now exactly what did "THE JEWS" do to Gibson to merit this sentiment? I use the term in the collective sense deliberately - it is not one individual that somehow wronged Gibson and happened to be Jewish - it is "THE JEWS." It is precisely the sentiment that has driven anti-Semitism through the centuries.

There is a theme here - he comes from a family environment that espouses anti-Semitism, he makes a movie that is gratuitously violent and could be interpreted as encouraging the view that Jews killed Christ and now he has this tirade. I am all for second chances but when I connect the dots here, the picture of Gibson that emerges is not very flattering.

pretty much every faith has committed significant wrongs in the past. Thats the nature of crowd mentality, with the right stumulus they become like locusts rubbing each others back. Not saying that Jews are specifically to blame for anything, nor catholic protestant, Amish, Muslim. People sometimes become lazy with their though process and its easier to group stuff together especially when they are angry or drunk
