No Carolina St. (-6.5) @ Georgia Tech
NC State has a prolific offense that has averaged 484 total yards at 6.8 yards per play (against teams that allow an average of 5.5 yppl on defense), but their defense makes them a risky proposition laying points on the road. The Wolfpack have surrendered 6.5 yppl on defense this year (to teams that combine to average 5.8 yppl on offense) and they’ve had an especially tough time defending the pass, allowing 8.3 yards per pass play to teams that combine to average 7.0 yppp on offense. Georgia Tech’s freshman quarterback Reggie Ball has had to take on a tough slate of defensive teams, but he should put up decent numbers in this game and the offense, which has averaged 4.4 yppl against teams that allow 4.6 yppl, should approach the 30 point plateau. It will be up to Georgia Tech’s solid defense (4.6 yppl allowed to teams that average 5.0 yppl on offense) to slow down NC State’s potent attack and they are certainly capable of doing so given their great performance against a very good Florida State offense a few weeks ago (allowed just 14 points and 4.1 yppl in that game). NC State gave up 34 points at home last week in a non-covering win over North Carolina, but that poor defensive effort sets up the Wolfpack in a negative 73-142-8 ATS situation that plays against road favorites after a poor defensive effort at home the previous week. I’ll favor Georgia Tech to cover based on that situation.
