  • I'm having a spyware issue...

I have Norton 360, but I can't get this stupid alert to go away. It keeps taking me to some software site it wants me to download.

This is the site VirusProtect :: Home Page

How fucking worthless was this. I just had a chat with a so called tech support for my Norton software:

    Mr. ..... has entered room.

    Ashish has entered room.

    Ashish(Sun Jan 13 14:50:23 EST 2008)>Hello Mr. ..... My name is Ashish.

    Ashish(Sun Jan 13 14:50:28 EST 2008)>Welcome to Symantec Virus & Spyware Solutions.

Is this the first time you are contacting us or do you have a Priority ID?

Mr. ....(Sun Jan 13 17:47:09 EST 2008)>I contacted Norton 360 live chat

Ashish(Sun Jan 13 14:51:23 EST 2008)>For quality assurance , please provide your email address and direct phone number and alternate (cell) number ?

Mr. ....(Sun Jan 13 17:48:13 EST 2008)>email ....com, phone 111-111-1111

Ashish(Sun Jan 13 14:52:58 EST 2008)>Please let me know which Symantec product you are using and its version/year.

Mr. ....(Sun Jan 13 17:49:38 EST 2008)>Norton 360, I just bought it today

Ashish(Sun Jan 13 14:53:35 EST 2008)>May I know which Operating System do you have on the computer? (Operating System would mean Windows Vista, Windows XP, Mac OS, etc.)

Mr. ....(Sun Jan 13 17:50:10 EST 2008)>Windows XP

Ashish(Sun Jan 13 14:53:59 EST 2008)>May I know which country you are connected from?

    Mr. ...(Sun Jan 13 17:50:29 EST 2008)>U.S

Ashish(Sun Jan 13 14:54:30 EST 2008)>May I verify your name as Mr. ... for our records?

    Mr. ...(Sun Jan 13 17:50:56 EST 2008)>YES

Ashish(Sun Jan 13 14:54:53 EST 2008)>Thank You for all the information. I would now create a Priority ID for you. In the meanwhile could you please give me a short description about the issue you are facing on your computer.

Mr. ...(Sun Jan 13 17:52:35 EST 2008)>In the tool bar active icon area, there is an icon that is flashing a warning about a threat to my computer. When I click it I get taken to a site to purchase anti-virus/spyware software.

Mr. ....(Sun Jan 13 17:53:37 EST 2008)>This is where it takes me VirusProtect :: Home Page

Ashish(Sun Jan 13 14:59:09 EST 2008)>Thank You for your patience.

Your Priority ID is 486958736 . Please make a note of it for future reference.

Ashish(Sun Jan 13 14:59:26 EST 2008)>As what I understood from your issue is that you got infected with virus, in your computer . Is that right ?

    Mr. ....(Sun Jan 13 17:56:43 EST 2008)>Yes

Ashish(Sun Jan 13 15:00:32 EST 2008)>May I know whether you have downloaded any free software’s, animation’s, free music, movies etc from the internet recently? Or did you accept any ActiveX controls or video codec’s when prompted from unreliable websites?

Mr. ....(Sun Jan 13 17:57:30 EST 2008)>I believe it was an ActiveX control from what I thought was a realiable website

Ashish(Sun Jan 13 15:01:37 EST 2008)>Norton is protecting you from tens of thousands of existing malwares and from the hundreds of new threats released every single day. It provides among the best security that is available for your computer.

This particular infection could have been caused while subscribing or downloading from free websites or when you download/transfer files such as movies, songs, screensavers, games, etc. from other computers, such as in a P2P system, or from insecure websites.

Normally when you download something, it would ask for your permission to open/install, and accept the license agreement such as EULA.

When you do so, being the administrator/final authority of the computer you are potentially authorizing an override of the security restrictions in place.

Ashish(Sun Jan 13 15:01:41 EST 2008)>Do you see any yellow triangle icon blinking on the right hand corner of your task bar with an ! mark on it or any unusual icons on your task bar or system tray?

Mr. ....(Sun Jan 13 17:58:50 EST 2008)>Yes, there is one that flashes what looks like a shield and toggles between a blue question mark and a red X

Ashish(Sun Jan 13 15:03:06 EST 2008)>..., Once there is infection on your computer, they would normally try to spread to other files on your hard drive and to other computers/devices connected to your system. Most of the times, they create/manipulate entries and keys in your windows registry. In these cases we need to manually remove these registry entries and also remove the infected files.

Manipulating the registry is sometimes very precarious and is to be done with extreme care, since any incorrect changes could mean that the computer’s functioning could be altered maybe even unchangeably altered. Hence it is always recommended that only a trained expert do this for you.

Ashish(Sun Jan 13 15:03:11 EST 2008)>Are you connected from the computer, which is facing this particular issue?

    Mr. .....(Sun Jan 13 17:59:57 EST 2008)>yes

Ashish(Sun Jan 13 15:04:07 EST 2008)>Our expert Consultants would provide you the best solutions possible based on their analysis of the threats on your computer. They would also provide you with information to avoid from getting infected in the future. They would advise you based on the specific configuration/settings of your computer and also answer your related concerns and queries. The Consultation fee would be US $99.95.

Ashish(Sun Jan 13 15:04:12 EST 2008)>This process is guaranteed to remove all viruses, if the viruses are not deleted, we'll refund fee, After cleaning we'll also provide you free educative links for you to refer and stay safe .So you need not worry at all in future about nasty virus issues .So shall we start process ?

Mr. ....(Sun Jan 13 18:01:17 EST 2008)>Are you fucking kidding me. I just spent $80 dollars on software that now seems to be second rate.

Ashish(Sun Jan 13 15:05:11 EST 2008)>When you purchase the product, the cost of the product is for the software, updates to the software and for the virus definitions. Apart from this, there is an additional charge for value added services.

Ashish(Sun Jan 13 15:05:19 EST 2008)>...., The money you pay is worth the efforts put forth by our Consultants in resolving the issue on your computer. You would have one of the experts in this field to assist you in resolving the issue. Once they are able to remotely connect to your computer, you just need to sit back and relax while they do the necessary steps to resolve the issue. Your presence is only required if we need to restart the computer and to ensure an active Internet connection.

We do not charge you on an hourly basis like certain other similar support services, and we offer you a 15 days support which is a great value for the money you pay and you could get back to us during that time if the issue persists.

Moreover once the infection is removed our technicians would provide you expert advice, based on the specific configuration/settings of your computer, on how to stay protected in the future from similar threats.

    Ashish(Sun Jan 13 15:05:24 EST 2008)>Do you wish to proceed ?

Mr. ...(Sun Jan 13 18:02:12 EST 2008)>NO, I don't believe you are even a real person.
