blue ray is going to win. it's all but a done-deal as it now stands. my problem is that there isn't much of a selection still so i decided to hang onto my dvd player for a bit and wait till more is available. my dvd player is pretty cool though. it has a built it 'upscale' feature which will upscale as far as 1080i depending on the set compatibility. it really does make a noticeable difference though it's not true 1080p or 'i' for that matter. it's noticeably better than standard dvd playback though...

Yea, Time Warner just made the announcement a few weeks ago that they would only support blu-ray. That is pretty much the death blow to HD-DVD. After the announcement HD-DVD sales hit rock bottom. Supposedly they are going to try one last big superbowl ad campaign. Its too late for them though.
just like goliath said, i wont buy a player until it is all said and done. 1 standard. that is when i will buy a blu-ray player.

I would agree that Blu-Ray is in front to win this, primarily because they have the backing of most major studios...most, but not all. The problem is that the primary backer of HD-DVD-in addition to Toshiba who created it and is marketing it is Microsoft. And as we all know they will vigorously support their systems (X-Box etc.) even if it means taking a loss...Paramount and Universal Studios support HD-DVD exclusively for their format while Disney, Fox, Lionsgate, MGM, Sony and Warner have thrown their support behind Blu-Ray. Additionally you have to understand that this is for a HD format..all the studios still release in regular DVD format outside of HD.
Bottom line, I would get a HD-DVD player that not only will play HD-DVD's but will also upscale your regular DVD to 1080i...and if you want to get a Blu Ray player do it along the lines of a PS-3--if your a gamer.
I will tell you that the a 1080p resolution plasma playing a Blu-Ray if absolutely off the hook--if you havent seen it you will be amazed

microsoft could care less about hd-dvd really. they didnt invest much at all into them. they built a little side player that you could use with the 360. that was a smart move instead of building it into the 360.Originally posted by funniirishman View PostI would agree that Blu-Ray is in front to win this, primarily because they have the backing of most major studios...most, but not all. i think you are giving HD-DVD a little to much credit actually. they are just about done. the market is now 90/10 in favor of blu-ray. 2 months ago it was 50/50. that is how big the warner announcement was.

you can still play games on a plasma. it will be no worse then say a football game that has the sports ticker in the same place for 2-3 hours. that can cause burn in also.Originally posted by ROCKETW19 View Postwell there goes the PS3 then Ill just get a regulay blue ray. I have noticed they are about 400 bucks now.

what about when I watch non HD channels and the picture is smaller on the sides will that burn in also? I thought I noticed it in light colors the other day?Originally posted by THE BOUNCER View Postyou can still play games on a plasma. it will be no worse then say a football game that has the sports ticker in the same place for 2-3 hours. that can cause burn in also.

DivX is important to anyone that wants to take high resolution content and compress it. Div is a codec, compression/decompression, device. When you import a large video file, like an HD movie for example, it tends to be a very large size, in terms of MB and GB. Divx compresses the file, but holds the resolution relatively well. It is important to those of us who 'may share' movies for dowloading, etc.Originally posted by SonofBone View PostWhat does DivX provide?
I was trying to buy some DVD burning software & discovered this format. Will it be big one day?

As for Blu-Ray/HD Battle. Blu-Ray is the clear winner. However, if you like something for the interim. HD DVD players are like 100 bucks and you can still get a lot of good HD movies. THus you have an HD and upscaling DVD player until Blu-Ray, fucking Sony, brings down the price...

you are talking about the black bars on the side right? yes that will cause burn in. you need to set you cable box or tv to stretch the non hd image. the picture will be a little distorted on non hd channels but it will prevent the burn in.Originally posted by ROCKETW19 View Postwhat about when I watch non HD channels and the picture is smaller on the sides will that burn in also? this is part of the reason i was saying that i dont like plasma, they provide a great picture etc only when the conditions are perfect.
