  • Lesnar impresses, but loses UFC debut

LAS VEGAS — Brock Lesnar was everything he was purported to be in his UFC debut.

Unfortunately for the former WWE star, Frank Mir was, too. Mir, the ex-UFC heavyweight champ whose career was nearly derailed by a 2004 motorcyle accident, survived an early pounding to submit Lesnar at 1:30 of the first round Saturday at the Mandalay Bay Events Center.

Lesnar, a college wrestling national champion, easily took Mir down twice in the early going and was pounding away with fists and elbows to the grounded Mir. But Mir worked for submissions and eventually worked into a knee bar that forced Lesnar to tap out.

It was an interesting fight actually. Lesnar showed some power, but very little overall MMA skill in my opinion. Taking Mir down means very little, because Mir has one of the sickest guards around and being on his back isn't a disadvantage for him.

Why some people are quick to say that Lesnar is legitimate, we have yet to see if he can take a punch, yet to see if he has a standup game, and yet to see if he can fight off his back, or has anything beyond "lay on you and hammerfist". In all, I think he has a ways to go before he is up to fighting the upper echelon heavyweights.

Mir on the other hand does what Mir does and he did it well. My only question was whether he was going to come into the fight in shape, and it appears he did and that from his injuries standpoint he is recovered. I think this win puts him back in the thick of things in the HW division..

Brock needs to work on his ground skills more...no doubt...should have felt that kneebar coming and adjusted his body accordingly However, that idiot referee most likely saved Mir when he broke them up and put them back on their feet when Brock connected with ONE shot ot the back of the head in GNP. No warning....just break them up and take a point??!! Never seen that before...Mir was toast.

The punch was a hammer fist to the back of the head, which is illegal and given this was a heavyweight bout can instantly change the dynamic of the fight...so I understood the stop and the one point deduction....but if it hadn't happened-hard to say, Mir is comfortable on his back--but 260 pounds of muscle punching your grape is still 260 pounds punching your grape---

it played out just as we (yellow Jacket and I) knew. A good fight would of been tim and brock. if that fight happened brock would be world champ right now. I hope tim and brock get the next fight. Mir will beat big NOG and retain the belt.
