The philosopher Aerostatle struggled with this topic a lot (not that i read his stuff much) - but i remmembered one thing he talked about was aethism and religion. He spent his life trying to figure it out. basically he concluede it doesnt hurt believing in god b/c if u die and your wrong it doesnt matter, whereas if ure an atheist and you die and your wrong well youll have to spend eternity in a lake of fire LOL. in short, so why not? then i think he killed himself LOL j/k

what you're talking about is referred to as Pascal's Wager. what it boils down to is that ignorance is bliss for some. others, however, would rather live what they believe to be true than waste their lives on a lie. this was hinted at in that movie 'the matrix'...would you rather sleep and dream your life away, or truly live with your eyes open, despite how ugly the world may have become? some chose ignorance, others chose life.

the biggest problem that i see with the wager is that if we are made to be the beings that we are, god would not punish us for using the very minds which he gave us. just because scripture says something on the topic does not make it so.

we are the same as trees, plants, rocks, and distant planets. all the same stuff, carbon. we are just put together in various ways. thread over. :P
