I can't deny that the open wheel racers are good as hell. It takes a lot of god given talent to do that type of racing. But it also takes a lot of talent to be a stock car driver. But I think it takes two different kinds of talent. As far as getting around the track in the fastest time, obviously there are more variables and therefore more talent required in Formula One. As far as having to use different competitive strategies such as drafting, bump drafting, etc., I definately think that's where NASCAR drivers shine.

As far as which one is more exciting to watch, its up for debate. But personally I don't see how anyone can watch F1 racing without falling asleep. Lets compare F1 and NASCAR for a second. First of all, lets start with the obvious. Sure there are going to be dominant athletes in any sport, but in F1 one guy wins like 75% of the races!! And I think in the 2007 F1 season 4 different drivers won a race. Thats it! F1 has just as much to do with the amount of money a team has to spend as is does with driver skill. Sure Michael Shumaker was a great driver, but I'm sure he also had the most money to spend, which translates to a dominant car over everyone else. In NASCAR, there are dozens of different winners every year. There are 43 drivers in the field and all of them have the chance to win. In F1, there are 20 drivers in the field and 2 or 3 of them have the chance to win.

Lets go to watching the race itself. In F1, there might be 1 or 2 lead changes at the most? Usually between the same 2 or 3 guys every race. In NASCAR there are probably 10 lead changes throughout the day at the least. Another thing.... In F1, the race could be in the bag with 50 miles to go. In NASCAR nothing is won until you cross the finish line.

I just think F1 is boring in general when it comes to watching the competition. Maybe if more rules and restrictions were put on setup, that would bring more competition into play and maybe make it more exciting. I just cant watch a race that only shows a car passing another car every half hour or so. There is just no drama.

The only thing F1 has over NASCAR is the more maneuvering that is required to get through the track itself. If I were watching qualifying laps, perhaps F1 would be more exciting. But besides that, I would rather watch a race that actually has some competition. Just my 2 cents.

Maybe its me, but I get way more enjoyment out of watching how someone drives than anything else. A perfectly executed turn is something of beauty. Getting drunk and hoping there is a crash is a completely different ballpark.

So would you be perfectly ok with watching guys just riding around the track by themselves and then comparing times at the end? Because that is basically the same thing and the same amount of excitement.

Real NASCAR fans aren't just sitting there drinking waiting for crashes. That is a stereotype just like saying all hockey fans only watch because of the fights.

Anyway, purist NASCAR fans want to see racing and competition, something that F1 is lacking.

Say what you want. I don't take offense because I am far from a hillbilly. But I have been around enough snot nosed "sophisticated" Europeans who think their shit doesn't stink to make my decision.

That is actually exactly what I did my first two summers in college, before I got an internship. Drive down to VIR or Watkins Glen and have it out on the track. Whoever gets the best time...bragging rights. Like I said, its quite possible its me. I love driving for the pure enjoyment of it and to get better. Theres nothing quite like pushing your car to its limit and hearing the tires scream for grip...then reigning the car back in and hitting a straight way...its been too long since I've been on a track. :(

BTW, my BMW comment was pure sarcasm. Don't get too upset over it.

Well that's a completely different thing. As far as driving fun, and which track takes more skill. It is no contest! I would much much rather drive on a road course and have a car with good handling. Driving around an oval by yourself would be insanely boring. I'm solely speaking of which I would watch from a spectators standpoint. The only comparison I was making was the entertainment from the competition of NASCAR compared to the lack of competition in F1.

I wasn't angry at you about the BMW comment. It just brought up the feelings that I have about the Europeans who talk about how unsophisticated Americans are. Especially talking about Americans from the South.
