  • Need new DVD player

My DVD player finally is dying - it randomly refuses to play certain DVDs and is making strange whirring sounds.

It is about 6 or 7 years old and I haven't been keeping up on the latest on A/V technology. Does anyone have some good recommendations on which DVD player to get?

Any DVD player will be better then one you got 7 years ago. If you have an HDTV you could go with a Blu-Ray player.

How much do blu-ray players cost vs. regular dvd players? I don't want to pay a premium right now for blu-ray because I don't really watch too many recently released movies. This is mostly for watching older stuff.

Blu-Ray players will cost about double or more.

Basic DVD players are very cheap these days and they do the job just as well or better then a top notch dvd player 6-7 years ago.

Something like this would work fine for you. Amazon.com: Sony DVP-NS77H/B 1080p Upscaling DVD Player with HDMI Output Black: Electronics

Received this a couple of weeks ago - I only paid $79 after rebates and stuff. It is amazing how cheap electronics have become!

The player is wonderful. Thanks B!

Does that even have a USB port?

not sure but whats the point? it obvious from the thread that he just has basic needs. very doubtful he will ever have a need for the usb port.

No, it does not have a USB port - just component video, S-video, std. RCA, and HDMI. My TV does not have HDMI inputs, so I just use component video connectors to hook it up. I can't say I have ever hooked up my DVD player to a computer, so it doesn't matter for my usage model.

You guys are old school. I have friends who download movies and tv shows onto my external hard-drive for me. Then I just plug the hard-drive into my dvd player and watch them on my TV.

Not old school...just don't like to sacrifice quality if I don't have to. ;)

When you that you lose video quality due to compression.
