It was only a matter of time. Wild animals will always be "wild" by nature.

Tiger Mauls Magician Roy Horn in Las Vegas Show

LAS VEGAS (Reuters) - A white tiger mauled famed Las Vegas illusionist Roy Horn during a performance by the "Siegfried and Roy" duo on Friday night, seriously injuring the magician on his 59th birthday.

Witnesses at the scene said the tiger, named Montecore, grabbed Horn's forearm. The magician hit him with his microphone and the tiger then lunged and bit him on the left side of the neck, causing profuse blood loss.

Horn was rushed to the University Medical Center, which said later he was out of surgery but still in critical condition.

The show has been canceled until further notice and the tiger, which was performing for the first time, is being quarantined at the hotel.

"The last place Roy would place blame would be with the animal," said Bernie Yuman, manager for "Siegfried and Roy."

White tigers and lions are a trademark of the German-born illusionists, who have been putting on one of the most famous shows in Las Vegas for 30 years.

Horn's partner in the show is Siegfried Fischbacher, 64.

its always a risk when you mess with a nondomesticated large meat eating animal that in the wild does attack and eat humans.

You know the old saying"Play with fire........" i'm amazed it hadn't happened sooner. Cats large and small are all natural born killers and the bad thing is this cat will probally have to be put down now having a taste for human blood.

I love stories like this. I also love it when bullfighters get gored. Like njjuicer said, it serves people right when they get hurt while messing with animals.

Siegfried and Roy, are well known for there work with big cats and there preservation. There use of cats in there act is turned directly into restoring habitat and reserves. Humans who are the greatest hunters that the planet has ever known have wiped out almost all its competitive predators. These animals no longer have a place to survive in the wild and are now completely dependent on man for there survival. think of them as native Americans shoved off on to reservations and preserves. The only habitat and wildlife on the planet has is what ever we decide to let them have and there lives are dependent on what we give or take away. These guys have devoted a lifetime of service to these great cats and they should not be looked down upon for the interaction with them. It is not like we are talking about a lion tamer show were creatures are abused for entertainment. Even a dog, mans best friend at any time can turn around and maul a child or its human companion does that mean we shouldn’t interact with them. And for the sake of argument what do you think would happen to these creatures if we didn’t share friendship with them. I can tell you from my experience of growing up on a farm and living with critters my entire life. Every animal is a different as individual people. The have personality, feelings, they experience love and anger and compassion. Some are good and some are evil. They communicate clearly with each other and with people. All creatures have instincts, even people but like people they also learn within there limitations as a species or and individual. You can’t look at an animal as an animal and leave it at that. They are thinking loving caring individuals regardless of what the spices is.

well said! i agree 100% that sigfried and roy do a wonderfull service for these animals. someone mentioned bull fighting - apples to oranges my friend. bulls are not on the verge of extiction. bull fighting and riding are mean and cruel and i love to see a guy take a horn in the gut as mush as the next guy. they deserve it. but sig and roy, as timber said, have devoted their lives to helping these cats, not harming them. i don't think what happened is funny at all.

Agreed! What happend to Roy was bound too happen sooner or later, due to the fact that they are dealing w/wild animals, but it is not because they are mistreating them.

Never said they were mistreating them...but they are taking them and forcing them to live a life that is not natural. Tigers are not meant to be tamed...they are predators, and their predatory instincts can only be supressed for so long.

A domestic house cat is not domestic either. The only beast that is truly domestic is a dog and not all breads either. The man K9 relationship goes back to the cave man era. The wolf and human have been found buried together as companions since the earliest remains of man. It is believed that if it were not for the wolf that the human may not have even survived that period of evolution. It is believed that the wolf and human relationship is what tipped the balance against the Neanderthal and the 4 other evolving primates of the period. It is because of the long history of human and K9 that they appear domestic. Truth be told there is no such thing as a domestic animal. There are hunters and there are prey and then there are Hybrids that are in a category all there own. We like to call the hunters Exotic and the Prey & Hybrids Domestic. I consider only hybrids domestic and I use the term sparingly. You see a house cat does not need a human for it to survive. They are completely self sustaining. They don’t need anyone. Many dog breads are the same but not all. The proper term is Feral not Domestic. To be honest the only domestic animals are really only cattle and they are far from safe to be around. They are however genetically evolved into beasts of a specific design. The very bottom line is there is no such thing as a natural environment for any beast anymore. The earth belongs to the humans for the time being and that is the environment that every creature has to live with. For the moment we are the top of the food chain. It took a very short time and a very small number of humans to erase the Saber Tooth Tiger from history, One of the greatest hunters in history could not compete with a creature 1/8 its weight and size and now there isn’t even DNA left of it. There is no such thing as a natural environment as long as humans hunt the planet. Humans do however realize that we have to preserve some kind of a life for these beasts and have created simulated environments for them but if it were not for that there would only be prey. There is never any room for more than 1 hunter in a killing field.
