  • Are humans meant to eat meat??

First of all, whether we are meant to eat meat or not, I'm still going to eat the hell out of it, just like always. So I'm not trying to back up the vegetarian lifestyle because there is no way in hell I could live like that.

But when you think about it. Every other animal that eats meat is fast enough to catch it. We are not naturally fast compared to other carnivores or omnivores. We don't have the claws teeth to kill our prey without tools. We are the only animals that have to use tools and technology to kill animals to eat. (Imagine a human trying to kill an animal to eat with his bare hands. Just not a natural thing) Also we are the only animals that need to cook our meat in order to digest it without taking the chance of being sick. We lack some of the digestive enzymes of other carnivores and omnivores.

You guys think we were meant to eat meat??

Well we have always eaten meat, so I don't guess we ever "strayed" from the vegetarian lifestyle. We may not kill our prey with bare hands, but we've certainly always been smart enough to go about it in other ways.

I tried being a vegetarian when I was younger. I did it for about a year - it's hard work. I didn't mind NOT eating meat, but I wasn't supplementing the protein properly and I was way thin, etc. I mean, who wants to eat tofu?!

We have both teeth to tear and chew. We need protein to be healthy. As for the enzymes, we don't have them now but that doesn't mean we didn't use to. People have been cooking food for a very long time and people have evolved. Jaw lines over generations have become smaller since we don't have to chew as much and we don't have room for wisdom teeth. Having the enzymes or antibodies aren't the only reasons we don't eat uncooked meat. People are also living longer because we know more about what makes us sick. We don't have the enzymes to digest cellulose that's in vegetables, but cows do. Should we not eat vegetables?

Also before we learned about fats and how we could supplement them in a healthy way, we needed the animal fat to store as energy for hard times. Weather it be beef, poultry or fish, they all have stuff our bodies need.

yes, what do you think the caveman diet is all about? :)

we may not be fast enough to catch everything we eat, but we were given brain to get the job done. plus, we actually are fast enough to catch many of the things that we eat. cavemen hunted a lot like wolves do, in packs. they stalked the prey, planned the attack, and then struck.

add to that the fact they we have digestive systems specifically designed to eat meat. i think the answer is clear.

One look at our teeth and the answer is obvious...of course we're meant to eat meat.

Some scientists think that our appendix was once an organ that helped us digest raw meat (darwin thought it helped us digest leaves at one time). We have teeth like a herbivore in the back but we have teeth like a carnivore too (canines).

I certainly don't think we were meant to drink milk our whole lives.

This is a little off topic, but is also believed that our bodies still work a lot like the hunter's and gatherer's bodies worked. After a big kill, hunter's could feast for up to two weeks without putting on much fat and mainly muscle. Conversely, they could go a couple weeks without much food and not lose much muscle and only fat. However, after a couple weeks either way, undesirable consequences occur...no food & you start losing muscle mass...or...if you sit around and eat too much too long, then you start accumulating a lot of fat.

In today's world it is known as the ABCDE (Anabolic Burst Cycling Diet Nutrition diet) & some recommend following Akerfeldt's original version & sticking to 12 days vs. the 14 that Bill Phillips recommended in his supplement review.

Along time ago there were humans that were designed better to eat meat. They died off when all the big mammals died. They couldn't sustain the life style of today. Those that survived were mainly herbivores, us. That doesn't mean that we were meant NOT to eat meat, just that we are better suited to eat veggies and carbohydrates...same thing.

i would disagree. we have all the elements in place to eat and digest meat. many people have a problem with carbs, bloat etc..

i am not saying that we are not well suited for veggies and carbs. just that we are no better suited then we are for meat.

I had a history major tell me that...So, I don't know. I believe him though, because he's a smart kid.

for someone as smart as you, that was an incredibly ignorant statement.
