I actually played college golf for all four years. Can be a fun game but its frustrating. I love the game but got seriously burnt out on it.

As far as cheap, forgiving clubs. I'd get on ebay and look for a set of Nike Slingshot irons. Very easy to hit and wouldn't cost too much. As far as a driver and fairway woods, anything Cobra would be a great choice. They perform and they are cost effective. Good luck!

I played all through my teenage years and got pretty good at it there for a while - I'm not so hot anymore but it is a great networking tool in certain circumstances - I've been involved in several golf tournaments that had I not played I would have missed out on a LOT of socializing that benefited me later on down the road in my job....

Try a set of Ping "Zings" - they're Ping knock offs and I "grew up" on a set before I invested in a "real" set - unfortunately I didn't play any better with the real thing so beware :P...

i just picked up a set of cobra irons on ebay -- i grabbed the oversized irons -- better for beginners -- more forgiving -- bigger sweet spot -

my brother gave me a driver - now just need to grab a putter - 3 wood and a 5 wood

This is my area of expertise. You can go to Dicks and pick up some pretty cheap good clubs. For a beginner there's no need for anything expensive, as you won't tell the difference. You could go to Golf Galaxy too since they'll have more and are owned by Dicks.

i play and i swing the calaway x20 tours there great but more for people already playing, i love callaway clubs def better than the nike or pings ive had and i also liked my old school tommy armours but ebay is the way to go, theres more involved to clubs than just the name, for years i was swinging regular shaft clubs and i swing to hard for regular shaft so i purchased some stiff and droped like 5 strokes right off my score by having the right clubs
