"Now Nintendo’s latest brainchild, Wii Fit, could send similar ripples through the home-fitness market. Scheduled to be released in North America next week, Wii Fit is not meant to replace a gym. But in a world of $3,000 elliptical machines and $150-an-hour personal trainers, it has at least a chance of becoming a global, affordable, mass-market interactive home-fitness system. (On its overseas debut last month, it became one of the fastest-selling games ever in Britain.)

Exercising with Wii Fit is like having a Bob Harper or a Denise Austin who talks back — gently cajoling you through exercises, praising, nudging, even reminding you to eat a banana once in a while. It also lets you see how you stack up against friends or family members; each user creates a cartoony avatar called a “Mii.”

I don't know how i feel about this. On the one hand I feel its kind of a shame that people are so inactive these days that a video game will actually be a strenuous workout for them.

On the other hand, I guess anything is good that gets people moving etc..

this doesn't seem like a bad product

i was thinking about getting for my family, so my little brother can stay active and possibly get my parents to workout on it

If you think about it, you can do a 30min workout on this in the morning on a empty stomach to get some of that extra fat burned, right???

yea, i mean anything that gets people moving is good.

i was just saying though that its kind of a shame that it is out of the question for so many people to go running outside, or go to the gym etc..

ya i know exactly what your saying, its very sad

Sometimes on a Friday it will be like 70 degrees outside and i will come home to find my little brother playing on the xbox, I am like DUDE your friends are outside, go play with them....than he says "NO, i don't feel like it"

Man, i sometimes think about throwing my xbox out the window. i agree 100% with you that video games are now making exercise games to get young fat kids moving, and even adults

i think everything has its place. its ok to play the xbox on occasion to kill some time etc..

but like you said, when its a beautiful day out and kids are spending ALL their free time playing games, something is wrong.

I like the idea. Yeah, it's a shame - but the fact is...people aren't exercising. So at least if we make it "fun", they're more likely to do it. I think Dance, Dance Revolution is a great example. It wasn't marketed as exercise (like the Wii fit is), but it really is cardio. I've stood and played that thing for a good hour, and it is definitely tiresome after awhile.

Blah, this will only give people an excuse to avoid their video games now.

Have any of you ever played Wii ? We have one at my house and almost all the games we have require complex physical movements. I have found myself working up a sweat many time playing Wii. We play as a family because we get the games for multiple players. It is fun and we have gotten may sedentary non exercisers to play when they come to our house and they love it. The Wii is not Xbox you gotta move to play. So this fitness game only makes sense as the next progression.

I agree that Wii fit is going to be a great thing. Wii boxing can get me to work up a sweat, especially if I go on for rounds and rounds. Its amazing what a workout that you can get on the Wii. I personally think it is great.

Obesity experts frown on Wii Fit's fatty-labeling, Nintendo apologizes

Video games can occasionally be the source of some pretty disheartening self-realizations -- like the time Rock Band revealed that you've been lied to your entire life about your angelic singing voice, or when Vampire Rain made you realize that you have incredibly poor taste in video games. However, something tells us these revelations are a bit less heartbreaking than those about to be unleashed by Nintendo's latest best-seller, Wii Fit -- especially when the heart in question is the fragile, butter-soaked heart of an overweight child.

Or an average-weighted child, for that matter. You see, Wii Fit measures the user's Body Mass Index (BMI), a weight/height ratio commonly calculated by physicians, though the use of BMI measurements in children is criticized by many dietitians for its frequent inaccuracy. Nintendo recently issued an apology following an incident involving the hurtful labeling of a "solidly built" 10-year-old girl. So, it's like an electronic, $90 version of our fifth-grade gym teacher? We're sold!
