  • Fiance signed up for personal training....

Ok so my fiance has the day off today, so she said that while I was at work today, she was going to go and use her free training session that we got for joining the gym. I told her to have fun and to learn everything she could. So she calls me after she is done to tell me she signed up for a year of personal training. She sees the guy once a week, for an entire year, and its $100 bucks a month. (Which of course is $1200 a year.) Well I was a little surprised. She asked me if I was mad, and I told her I was a little upset that she made a $1200 decision without at least talking to me first. She started to get upset and said she felt terrible and that she was going to call and cancel it. I told her not to do that, and that we would just talk about it when I got home.

Well here's my dilemna. On one hand, she really should have talked to me before she signed up for a $1200 deal. We are living together, and our income goes toward the same bills and expenses. We have student loans, car payments, rent, etc. Granted $1200 isn't too terrible considering she gets 52 sessions, but it is also $1200 that we could save, considering we are fresh out of college.

On the other hand, she makes 50% of the money. (Granted that will change before long when I start my other job, but as of right now she does.) And we aren't officially married. So if this is something she really wants to do, then maybe I have no room to say anything. I'm sure the guy is more knowlegable than me when it comes to training, especially training women.

I really don't know how to act. I'm thinking about suggesting that she call and ask the guy if she could train with him on a monthly basis instead of weekly. Perhaps this could be more affordable and be a good compromise. Thanks for any advice.

(And guys, I know I joke around a lot, and some of you might not take me seriously. But I would really prefer not to take a lot of shit for this post. For example, answers from ladies telling me, "stop being sexist a woman can make her own decisions, you need to stop being an asshole", and the guys telling me, "Fuck that, get that bitch in line and tell her to stop wasting money", really won't help me. Thanks everyone.)

Well I understand your side and I also understand hers.

I personally think it is a waste of money. If it was me and sana didn't know how to workout etc.. I would show her the basics of training, cardio, diet and save the $1200.

$1200 a year for some idiot trainer at an LA fitness type place is about $1199 to much IMO.

Yep. To the guy's credit he looks like he has been lifting for a long time, and he is a little older which might add a little bit of experience. I just had her on push/pull/legs with HIIT on the elliptical a few times a week. And her diet is good, because she basically eats whatever I eat. The guy told her how much definition and shit she was going to have after he writes down all of her workouts and her diet. But fuck she is something like 14% BF right now, I just don't see how much more this guy's workouts are going to get her than something basic.

I understand both sides. While I kind of look at it like "why didn't she just have you help her/show her the basics?" - I also realize that does not work out for every couple. She maybe felt more comfortable with someone else helping her (like not feeling "dumb" for asking certain questions, etc), or maybe you hadn't made any "effort" to show her you'd be more than willing, or she really just wanted someone to tell/show her what to do and not have to worry with what to train today or what exercises to do, etc. Unfortunately there are SO man "trainers" that just do not look or act like they should be taking anyones money.

Well, I did show her the basics. I really took a lot from Control's push/pull/legs post in the beginner's section. She was doing fine for the last few weeks. Apparently the trainer is a good salesman. I think he talked her into the fact that what he could offer was more effective than "the basics". Now my problem is how to proceed from here. While we really don't need to be wasting $1,200, it would be stupid to screw up our relationship and give her the impression that I am going to try and control her. I never want to be controlling in our relationship and I wouldn't want her to be that way either.

Hey man, i personally would save that $1200 dollars (its a lot of money)
If you said that was doing good the past few weeks, than it was the salesman that talked her into it.
Have her look at this site and do some reading and have her follow your advice about dieting and training
Also ask her to join and we can all help her out in her goals

Bro I say let her do it, it actualy is good for your relationship. also look at the bright side she is only spending $25 a week for her health I am sure there are somethings you do costst whole lot more than $25 a week so let her do it and be hapy about it. I've been a personal trainer for the last 16 years and a competitve bodybuilder I have bunch of clients(a few celebrities) and when it comes to training my girlfriend(even with my previous girlfriends) it does not work, it's easier for them to say I don't like this or I don't wanna do this or just simply stand there and nag. There were many times I just said fuck this and started to fight with them because all of a sudden they think they know more than me or again the attitute they have just pissed me off. Plus with the trainer she'll work a lot harder just the simple fact that us guys train different from the girls, when I train with my girlfriend even tho it's rare I spend to much time with loading and unlading the machines and that kills my workout.
So again it's for her health let her do it.

C'mon guys when did you guys started to think spending $25 a week for your health is waste of money? it's $1.200 a year not a month. how much do you guys spend a week on your food, protein powders and other supplements?
Aren't we all trying to tell everyone to get to the gym to be healthy? and how many peopl do you guys know that buys the gym membership and not go to the gym? this is just a good reason for her to go to the gym consistently and stay in shape.

i am talking about your average LA fitness type trainer. a good trainer like yourself that knows what he or she is doing is absolutely worth $1200 a year. unfortunately, there are many more terrible trainers then good ones.

yea, point remains. most trainers aren't worth 25 cents.
