USA JAIL - SOME INTERESTING READING
TO THOSE OF YOU NOT FAMILIAR WITH JOE ARPAIO, HE IS THE MARICOPA COUNTY SHERIFF (ARIZONA) AND HE KEEPS GETTING ELECTED OVER AND OVER AGAIN.

These are some of the reasons why:

Sheriff Joe Arpaio created the 'tent city jail' to save Arizona from spending tens of millions of dollars on another expensive prison complex.

He has jail meals down to 20 cents a serving and charges the inmates for them.

He banned smoking and pornographic magazines in the jails, and took away their weightlifting equipment and cut off all but 'G' movies. He says:
'They're in jail to pay a debt to society not to build muscles so they can assault innocent people when they leave.'

He started chain gangs to use the inmates to do free work on county and city projects and save taxpayer's money.

Then he started chain gangs for women so he wouldn't get sued for discrimination.

He took away cable TV until he found out there was a federal court order that required cable TV for jails. So he hooked up the cable TV again but only allows the Disney channel and the weather channel.

When asked why the weather channel, he replied: 'So these morons will know how hot it's gonna be while they are working on my chain gangs.'
He cut off coffee because it has zero nutritional value and is therefore a waste of taxpayer money. When the inmates complained, he told them, 'This isn't the Ritz/Carlton. If you don't like it, don't come back.'
He also bought the Newt Gingrich lecture series on US history that he pipes into the jails. When asked by a reporter if he had any lecture series by a Democrat, he replied that a democratic lecture series that actually tells the truth for a change would be welcome and that it might even explain why 95% of the inmates were in his jails in the first place.

With temperatures being even hotter than usual in Phoenix (116 degrees just set a new record for June 2nd 2007), the Associated Press reported: About 2,000 inmates living in a barbed wire surrounded tent encampment at the Maricopa County Jail have been given permission to strip down to their government-issued pink boxer shorts.

On the Wednesday, hundreds of men wearing pink boxer shorts were overheard chatting in the tents, where temperatures reached 128 degrees.
'This is hell. It feels like we live in a furnace,' said Ernesto Gonzales, an inmate for 2 years with 10 more to go. 'It's inhumane.'
Joe Arpaio, who makes his prisoners wear pink, and eat bologna sandwiches, is not one bit sympathetic. 'Criminals should be punished for their crimes - not live in luxury until it's time for parole, only to go out and commit more crimes so they can come back in to live on taxpayers money and enjoy things many taxpayers can't afford to have for themselves.'

The same day he told all the inmates who were complaining of the heat in the tents: 'It's between 120 to 130 degrees in Iraq and our soldiers are living in tents too, and they have to walk all day in the sun, wearing full battle gear and get shot at, and they have not committed any crimes, so shut your damned mouths!'

Way to go, Sheriff! If all prisons were like yours there would be a lot less crime and we would not be in the current position of running out of prison spaces.

Sheriff Joe was just re-elected as Sheriff in Maricopa County, Arizona

Yes it is true. I don't know that everything is a 24/7 thing, but he will continue to make life in that prison about basic needs to live and as little enjoyment as possible.

Well prison shouldn't be an enjoyable experience, not saying it should be inhumain either but I generally agree with his logic.

We had a thread about this not too long ago - there were mixed opinions about it.

I watched something on CNN or fuck it might have been youtube, a while back, talking about weightlifting in prison. The one prison that was really into powerlifting and had intense competitions every now and then had much less than average violence due to the stress reducing effects that weight training has. But I see his point on everythign else. If some dude steals my car I sure don't want to be paying extra tax dollars for him to be more comfortable if he doesn't need it to survive.

            See below...

Marijuana charges are ridiculous, the drug war is ridiculous.

I couldn't think of any better way to spend tax money......

Haha, I wrote in a hurry...
Most of the prisoners at the tent camp are there for drug crimes, which usually are victimless crimes. The average prisoner cost the taxpayers $40k a year...I don't want my taxes paying to keep some drug dealer or user in prison, and certainly not for lame drug charges (marijuana....:dunno:..who cares?)

You have to understand they still committed a crime. I have known plenty of people that use drugs and it's not just about who they hurt directly. They are supporting and contributing to a very dangerous world. It is very hard to see these things especially when so many of us use AS and feel we are not hurting anyone else. Without getting too much into it, we don't know or usually care about the route it takes to gets to us.

Committed a non-violent crime that is only illegal because some suits said it was? I understand everyone will have a different opinion on this matter, but we are wasting way too much money in the jail system. That is money that could be better spent on education, which in my opinion is weakly funded. Once the correctional system turned private it became like any other big business, its main goal is to make money, nothing else. Drug laws are not so that you are your family are "safe", they are created so that people can make money.

I totally agree with it. We have too many criminals who dont give a shit that they will go to prison because its just not that bad for them to do a little time.

And just so you know Turbo, the dude caught with the $50 sack of weed in his car is not the guy being sent to prison. Its the guy transporting 3 pounds of meth or the junkie that was embezzling money to feed his habit. You may hear otherwise but I see it every day. Its just not true that our prisons are packed with nonviolent drug users

Well saying a non-violent crime is not the same as saying a victimless crime. I know there is a lot of stuff that is about the money with the jails, but there is also a cutthroat (literally and figuratively) side with the drug business.

Anyone of you that gets caught with AAS can get in trouble just like the rest in that tent. so before you go calling them criminals remember you are one also!.
It is realy simple to get out of the tent. Just walk over and stab that fucking sheriff in his fucking neck. I gauranty you with out a doubt if he ever talked to me the way he talks to the press, he would have a ride to the hospital ahead of him. Then I would be sent to the Ad Seg (hole) where all the fun is. People in that tent are no-violent criminals that dont want to be in a real jail, so they deal with the tent instead!
