  • Stop Dog from Barking?

I have a 3 yr old & a 1 yr old Golden Retriever. My 1 year old has started barking incessantly. Hours on end. Not when we are there, just when we are away. My neighbor came to the door yesterday saying enough was enough.

Anyone had any luck with bark collars. There are 2 kinds. The spray and the shock. My wife wants us to try the citronella spray collars because they are more humane, but i would prefer to just shock the little fucker til he stops.

    Any experiences?

Have a shock battery operated one. It works but you need to get it set right. Depending on the dog, low just isn't enough, and too high knocks em on their a$$. They also get smart and know when they don't have it on and start barking again. Another thing is if the other dog should bark when they are together the other one gets zapped.

:D My big dog (3 year old) is smart enough that he would just bark to mess with the little one.

I'd go with a shock collar. Citronella isn't nearly as effective.

You guys that suggest the shock collar. Have you ever put one of them around your neck?

No need, as I don't have any bad habits that need correction. But I did threaten the wife once that I was gonna put one of those remote controlled dog shock collars on her leg, and zap her everytime she picked at her lips. Whenever they chap a bit, she goes at them trying to get rid of the dead skin...and it drives me NUTS!!! I'm kidding when I say I'll do this, of course...well, sort of.:D

Oh, and Bouncer....isn't it better for the dog to get zapped than to have the owner eventually snap and do some real damage...or have a fed-up neighbor load their shotgun to put an end to it?

No you can take the dog to a trainer or have one come to your house. They know what to do. I have to Rottweilers and they have a very loud bark. I had a guy actually come to my house and fix the problem. Im not into that zapper shit. I mean when you treing to teach a child to do something you gonna put a goddamn zapper around his neck? I just have a soft spot for animals I guess. I hate how people treat them sometimes.

If the dog responds to the usual training techniqes, then great. The zapper is a sort of last resort.

dogs dont feel like we as people do. also they have much thicker skin and disipate the shock. the spca endorses some shock collars to prevent barking because its one of the main reasons people give up dogs.

look for one that gives warning then a small shock that gradually gets stronger.
