Got Hit by Lightning

Saturday we're sitting around and a storm comes up. Just a few minutes into it, the house is hit by lightning. Both of us were on our laptops and the surge came through the laptops and shocked us both. It was just a quick jolt and not all that painful. Just more scary than anything to think about it. The electrician had to tell Solstice that we actually got hit by lightning through the house's circuitry.

It also blew a circuit board on the AC unit, garage door opener, kicked 3 circuit breakers of which one had to be replaced, the home alarm system, a smoke detector, router/modem, & partially fried the satellite receiver.

And wouldn't you know the deductible is 1K, so when it is all said and done, the biggest majority is out of pocket. However, the main thing is we weren't hurt, so I don't really care about the money in this case.

Getting things back in order now. I've worked the past two days from Starbucks, but the replacement router was here when I got home.

That lightning will get you. I've heard of it starting fires in peoples houses. Do you guys have your house properly grounded?

The electrician looked at the grounding wire and he thought it was a little bit loose where it is screwed into the grounding rod, so he wasn't sure that it helped very much. It has been tightened now.

He also recommended a surge arrester be installed at the breaker box. The AC guy recommended it as well, so I'm going to have one of those put in.

I got hit by lighting indirectly about 3yrs ago. There was a storm coming in from the west probably 5 miles away. I was working on a 10ft steel mast for a 10ft point to point antenna. My right bicep was touching the mast while I was adjusting it and talking on the cell phone to the guy on the other end of the shot when I heard a loud bang in the distance, my phone went dead, and I could taste metal in my mouth. I had a red spot on my arm in a few minutes, but the next day it looked like spoiled meat under my skin. The dr said it was an rf burn similar to the way meat is cooked in the microwave. Crazy shit!

Glad everything is ok. When I was 14 or so, there was an intense lightning storm outside. I wanted to see what would happen if I went outside and held on to our metal lightpole for 5 seconds. As soon as I did it, lightning struck very close by and I felt a shock go all the way through my elbow. I was like "Shit!" and ran back inside. I don't think I got struck by I definately felt a little bit of somethin somethin from close by. I was a stupid kid. :)

This didn't happen to me but I thought it was a funny story. An old manager of mine had a cattle ranch and one day she was out trying to get some of the cows into the barn (a select few don't remember why) because it was raining. As she was driving around she was looking at a group of them standing under a tree. Lighting struck the tree and all the cows fell over got up and ran away.
