And let me just tell you, after 5 years at a company, and 2 promotions, this is pretty hard to take. Especially when they just walk in on a Monday, and tell us our office is being shut down. Just unbelievable. Of course in our separation papers, they tell us it has nothing to do with the upcoming merger, but I'm no idiot. I just pray that I get a decent severence. Supposed to find out week after next what, if anything they will give us since we will be under the new company's name & eligible for thier severance.

I will also say this- trying to find a job right now- FUCKING SUCKS. I have sent out over 60 resume's...gotten 3 calls back so far. I know it takes time, and I should be patient, but shit. These are extremely scary times.

Hey- I was also wondering - Let's say they offer me 6 months of severance, and I take it. They can't take it away if I find a job in that 6 months, can they?

Not trying to be harsh but thats how his situation is. But he did get paid his 6 months severance. Thing is he was offered a job 3 months ago, but the company would only hire him if he agreed to get his Master's degree, paid for by that company, which he declined because he's a dumbfuck that wants to take life easy and not work hard, which explains why his 29 years old single and unmarried

That is tuff. You can't count on being with a company for long periods of time anymore these days. As for the severance my step dad has been in HR for decades and he basically said this "Policies for severance packages are often found in a company's employee handbook, and in many countries are subject to strict government regulation. Severance contracts often stipulate that the employee will not sue the employer for wrongful termination or attempt to collect on unemployment insurance, and that if the employee does so, then he must return the severance money."

I myself found out I am getting laid off 2 weeks ago. Im kind fo glad because ti will force me to focus on the business, and other endevours.

My last day is July 15th.

I am only getting one months severance though.

Red, the severence is yours to keep regardless of wether you find a job right off the bat or not.

if nothing else, file for unemployment a couple of weeks before your last day and live off unemployement and your severance/savings.

Wow - I'm sorry to hear that Red - I was with a company just shy of 7 years and dealt with similar sh*t...

It messed with my head for quite a while seeing that I had been there so long and had most of my adult "identity" tied up in it - don't take it that hard though because it definitely isn't/wasn't worth it....

Nekra is right on - the severance is yours to keep AND you should file for unemployment asap......

severance is severance. Once they give it to you, it's yours. Some companies will pay you as if you were still working there, (so every 2 weeks, twice a month) but then give you a lump sum if you find a job.

Sorry to hear that Red & Nekra. Sounds like you know what you're going to do Nekra, so best of luck with your business. Red good luck in finding something better. If you don't hear from some of those places in a couple of weeks, don't be afraid to call. I'm sure you were already planning that anyway. If they get a chance to talk to you, I'm sure it will mean a lot in addition to your resume.

Check the fine print on the severance. My guess is that you'll collect (& not have to repay) severance until you find another job. Once again, hope you get something better.
