Renzi (AZ01) - Press Release - Renzi Now Calling on "Big Oil" to Invest Profits into Research and Development for Alternative and Renewable Fuels

All of these fuel threads made me think of something I read the other day. The article above is about a senator encouraging oil companies to invest in alternative fuels with their high profits. I don't understand this.

That is like asking coke or pepsi to come up with an alternative drink. It's not their business to create a new cola f the old one still sells. So why should oil companies?

Don't get me wrong, something should be done about gas, but I don't think this is the way to go.

Chevron has been doing this for years. The demand for the product just isn't there, that is the problem. A good CEO would realize that something like this is coming and that the company, in order to survive, must adapt to survive. Exxon is just plain stupid for not doing and I thin the world would be better off without a company like that.

But that's not how business is done today. I agree with you, but in today's corporate world, the philosophy is...make a ton of money right now. The people running companies like Exxon won't be running those companies when their supplies are in danger of being depleted, so what do they care. They make their billions now and live like kings for the rest of their lives. It's not their problem and they know they will never have to deal with it, so they don't do anything.

For decades, the oil and automotive industries have been buying patents for things like alternative fuel and more efficient engines and putting them on the back shelf and never developing them. If alternative fuel is to be researched, it has to be done by someone outside of the oil industry.

Think about it. They're no different than any other big corporation. They're going to make decisions that give THEM the best future. And that future doesn't include anyone else's wellbeing. Internal combustion engines and fossil fuels are outdated technologies. There's no point to hanging on to them just because they're still making money other than just to make money. If there is no better viable alternative than they can just sit on their technology and make as much money as they can before the walls start to crumble. Then they can make better technology public and look like frickin heroes. I hate being lied to and deceived and that's exactly what companies like Exxon have been doing for decades. Back in the 70s there was a "gasoline shortage" and supplies of gas at $.70 a gallon "ran out". Then magically, tankers appeared after the price of gas went up to $1.00 a gallon with enough for everyone. People who worked in the oil industry back then will tell you that oil companies intentionally kept those tankers at sea until they could justify raising their prices for gasoline. You don't think that they're still selling us a bill of goods? Come on man. You're smarter than that.
