My ankles and knees are pretty beat up but lately I've been having problems with my left hip - the place where they inserted a rod into my femur is really hurting these days - trying to gets bags of ice in all the areas that hurt in any kind of timely fashion is out the window....

Not like you're going to quit the things that are damaging your body, so what's the point...

sounds to me like soccer needs to be cut back a bit.

i think thats a pretty easy one. a shock to your body such as extreme cold wouldn't be the best thing for your heart. not sure how bad it would be but..

I guess I'm wondering "how bad" it would be...

It was common practice in highschool - never liked them but they were necessary at times....

i used to do it when I played rugby and i know the guys on te national team do it as well as a bunch of my football buddies.

it hursts like hell, but provides relief far better than topical icing can. If you can't get the sweet metal tub like we had at university, find one of those giant garbage cans (http://www.pittjug.org/b2b/pics/Plas..._Container.jpg) and use one of those. The only drawback they have is that you can't sit in them.

Exactly - and I didn't necessarily mean you would keel over dead
