Some ex google guys have created a new search engine, I have been playing around with it. Actually pretty cool presentation of the results.
Cuil. Been a little slow throughout the day.

its terrible as it stands now. sorry. pulls up a bunch of shit i am not looking for and i cant find things I am looking for no matter how hard i try. works like a search engine from 1998 as it stands now. not even close to how well Google works.

A huge part of Google's success was timing. It' going to be hard for search engine to become any where near as popular. It's going to need to give something to the users more than just newness. Hell, Google is part of the webster and is used in conversation when telling someone to search for something. "Go google it"

I've used Copernic since the early 90's I still like it and it still works well. Haven't tried this new one yet.

while i agree on what your saying about timing. the main reason behind googles success is the way it searches. if you remember search engines like excite or yahoo from the last 90's they pulled up absolutly worthless shit. google is amazing in what it does and how it finds things. i read somewhere that google has some 1-2 million servers running all over the world. google is the internet. it makes or breaks websites. without google the web would be a vast ocean of shit mixed with good info and finding the info would be like finding a needle in a hay stack.

I think we are kind of saying the same thing. What would another search engine really have to offer that google doesn't...

I think the new generation search engines will try to display the data in certain ways and base searches more on the value of the text that appears in web pages. Google does a great job with search, but does not show things based on the value of the content.

But at one point Yahoo was the top search engine and two developers that worked on Yahoo's search engine went on to form their own company called "Google" to do it a different way. So always room for new technology.

Like you said for now Google is top dog. I just liked the way the search results were presented and the "Explore by category" on the side was interesting.

Yahoo's search capability is 5 times better than googles if I remember correctly. search for "bodybuilding + arnold," you will get a plethora of more pages from yahoo then google. Not all of them better, but more options

^Google... Not sure how many results you need :D

Google Street View - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Basically, you can type in an address of someones house address or street and see everything in pretty good detail. its perfect for all the stalkers/weirdos out there.
