US and Poland seal missile deal

The US and Poland have signed a deal to locate part of the US's controversial missile defence system on Polish soil.

US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice travelled to Warsaw for the ceremony, after 18 months of negotiations.

The deal has angered Russia, which has warned the base could become a target for a nuclear strike.

Washington says the system will protect the US and much of Europe against missile attacks from "rogue elements" in the Middle East such as Iran.

After seeing what went down in Georgia, I'm sure the Poles can't get official US backup on their side fast enough. My grandmother, who is Polish, has never lost her hatred of Russians and Germans due to obvious historical events. She never believed Russia would become a real democracy, and through the 90s and early 2000s was often heard mumbling "Never trust a ******* Russian" as world leaders made nice with them and they put on a smiling front. Turns out the old gal was right.

It's been unreal. The detail in filing the forms is so ridiculous, we even had it reviewed a few times by a satellite office as we went through different steps in getting it prepared. Then one final time before sending it off. We have received stuff back and re-mailed papers 3 times since the first mailing. Just to give you a time frame, we first mailed off the papers in February.

I think its a good thing personally, Europe and USA have always been closer than Europe and Russia and although both are superpowers that bring certain issues with them, there is something just too aggressive about Russia and its dealings I don't trust them.

They basically whacked one of their own defectors 'Litvinyenko' on English soil by poisoning his tea with radioactive material, killed him from the inside out. Then when we asked for the guy implicated, their authorities refused to hand him over and started chucking our diplomats out of Russia. The authorities and FSB (previousely KGB) were clearly in on it and it was just like saying, you fuck with us and nowhere is safe for you and they have no respect for other countries, its like cold war again.

Wow, I am sorry to hear that. It seems like they would make the process more streamlined with a faster turnaround.
