  • Eight-year-old shoots self with Uzi, dies

I'm sorry, but an 8 year old shooting an Uzi for fun? That seems way too young for my liking.

WESTFIELD, Massachusetts (AP) -- An 8-year-old boy died after accidentally shooting himself in the head while firing an Uzi submachine gun under adult supervision at a gun fair.

The boy lost control of the weapon while firing it Sunday at the Machine Gun Shoot and Firearms Expo at the Westfield Sportsman's Club, Police Lt. Lawrence Valliere said.

The boy was with a certified instructor and "was shooting the weapon down range when the force of the weapon made it travel up and back toward his head, where he suffered the injury," a police statement said. Police called it a "self-inflicted accidental shooting."

The victim was taken to Baystate Medical Center where he died. His name was not released.

Although the death appears to be an accident, police and the Hampden district attorney's office were investigating, officials said.

The club said on its Web site that the event, run in conjunction with C.O.P. Firearms and Training, is "all legal and fun." People will be allowed to fire weapons at vehicles, pumpkins and other targets, it said.

Officials with the private club and the firearms group could not be reached for comment. A message left on a club answering machine was not returned. The C.O.P. group's machine clicked off without taking a message.

The sportsman's club was founded in 1949 and describes itself on its Web site as an organization that promotes "the interest of legal sport with rod, gun, and bow and arrow, both directly and through training."

It has eight firing ranges as well as archery and fishing facilities located on 375 acres in Westfield, about 100 miles west of Boston

yup, the fact that something like that even has a chance of happening means it shouldn't happen at all.

I hate to break this to you guys but please remember you are dealing with the media.
Just the fact they used the word UZI means they are going after the big story. The UZI shoots just like anyother gun. IT WAS NOT FULL AUTO.

Now the fact the 8 year old was shooting ANY gun is way over my head and is just silly.

I don't care that it was an Uzi, I care that it was a deadly weapon and it was in an 8 year olds hands.

I was shooting by the age of 8 - nothing wrong with it in circumstances where personal responsibility and adequate instruction/supervision are administered...

A child is dead for NO reason - therefore, something IS wrong with it.

shot my first rifle at 5, but that is a lot different than a gas fed weapon.

depending on the type of rifle that makes sence.
I could see letting the kid shoot the gun with only 1 bullet at a time. it would be a pain to keep reloading 1 bullet but this wouldnt have happened.

I guess maybe it just comes down to what fog-hat had said the instructers should of been on top of it.

I learned on a single fire/bolt-action .22 and as I displayed more and more responsibility I moved up in calibers. I was hunting squirrels and rabbits by myself at maybe 9 or 10. I'm sure the kid had been shooting before but there was no need for him to have more than one shot at a time - it might have been a pita to do it that way but an 8yo doesn't need a clip - at least not any I know. Sad either way - definitely wasn't trying to downplay the issue :(

This happened in my back yard here. It was there annual automatic weapon day. They had video of him shooting a different weapon earlier in the day. He apparently put 1/2 a dozen bullets into his head. There is going to be a huge fall out from this.

I was trying to look for this, but all the reports say either that it was auto or they say nothing at all.
