  • Too much weight in pregnancy can make baby fat

    By Julie Steenhuysen

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Women who gain more than 40 pounds (18 kg ) during pregnancy have nearly twice the risk of delivering a heavy baby as those who gain less, U.S. researchers said on Friday.

The study of more than 40,000 U.S. women and their babies found as many as one in five women gains too much weight during pregnancy, doubling the chances her baby will weigh 9 pounds (4 kg) or more.

And they found women who gain more than 40 pounds during pregnancy are more likely to have a heavy baby even if they do not have gestational diabetes, a short-term form of diabetes linked with pregnancy that is known to increase the risk of having a big baby.

I believe that part of the problem is that when pregnant many women tend to indulge themselves, giving in to cravings and not being concerned with nutritional content or calories. If anything women should be more nutritionally concscious during pregnancy.

I think there is a big problem with women not taking care of themselves after the pregnancy and using it as a cop-out. My wife took about a year to get back to herself after my son was born, but she never gave up. Plus the healthier she got the more ready she would be for this pregnancy.

As for what they do during pregnancy, I will just leave at I have not place to comment :)

yep. its the "i'm not eating for 2" mentality.
it takes about a year for a womens body to go back to normal after pregnancy excluding the bodyfat gained.

Bouncer, I find the study interesting.

I have a few friends who had pregnancy diabetes and their kids ended up being big even though they were on a special diet throughout the pregnancy.
With my first one I gained 25 lbs, was eating moderate just like before I got pregnant. I put more emphasis on proteins but the rest of the diet remained the same. Also, this time around I am not counting calories or eating like crazy; have to admit that I have my days that I eat a lot, but then the other day would be different.

I know that some women just follow their crawings, but I am not sure what a woman has to do to gain 40 lbs....that seems A LOT.

NYCmitch, you are right, doctors are saying that after giving birth you should allow yourself as much time to get back to normal as it took for the baby to develop inside you, so 10 months at least.

Uh, no. Actually, with the increase in blood volume, breast tissue, placenta & baby- it equals AT LEAST 25 lbs. And, women have to have some stored fat for the energy reserves needed for actual labor.

Secondly, I'm not indulging myself beyond belief. I'm eating pretty healthy, with a couple cookies or french fries here and there. I still cook healthy meals for my husband and I every night. And, I'm still going to the gym 3 days a week doing weights & cardio.

So far, I have gained 11 lbs. I'm 17 1/2 weeks. My doctor said I'm actually under the expected & recommended 3 lbs average per month. So, 3lbs x 9 months+ 36 lbs.

Lastly- I'm not giving myself 9+ months to get my body back. I have every intention of doing a show next late October. Hell, I have one girlfriend who did the Hydroxycut challenge, and had a baby 6 months ago.

It's not as hard as it sounds. I'm a fairly small person, and I gained almost 40 pounds with my second baby (24 with my first). Just the fact that it was a second baby played a HUGE part in it.

But as a side note, I lost the 40 pounds I gained within a couple of months. Guess it just goes to show everyone's body is different!

Well, since this is technically my second- my body is remembering quite well. I look farther along than I am...but the weight is still not out of control...just my body appearance. And, I'm not bitching at all here- because it's been such a long, tortuous road to get to this point...BUT- I am having a very difficult time trying to get used to the exra weight & fat. Like, I want to throw up. It's even more frustrating to got to the gym 3 days a week, and watch that scale continue to climb... :(

Yes, I realize you're in your second pregnancy as well, and you're doing wonderful! Props to you for continuing to go to the gym. I know how tiring carrying a baby can be (especially the first trimester, wow!) - its great for you, baby, and will also help your delivery.

DON'T fret about the weight Red, seriously. I understand you've spent a good part of your life dedicating a lot of time/energy into your body - so I realize it's tough/frustrating to watch what appears to be your body/hard work going down the drain. Just keep in mind you WILL get it back - and sit back and enjoy the pregnancy. I'll bet your hubby thinks your sexy as ever with your little belly too.

If anything, I struggle terribly with the permanent changes that were made to my body. But I guess everything can be "fixed" - for a fee. ;)

I think you should post some pics :)
