  • Even a little caffeine may harm fetus, study finds

    By Michael Kahn

LONDON (Reuters) - Pregnant women who consume caffeine -- even about a cup of coffee daily -- are at higher risk of giving birth to an underweight baby, researchers said on Monday.

The new findings published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ) also linked any source of caffeine, including that from tea, cola, chocolate and some prescription drugs, to relatively slower fetal growth.

I'm proud of my wife that she even gives up chocolate during pregnancy because of the caffeine in it. I don't think most people realize that a bar of milk chocolate has about 30mg of caffeine in it and a basic cup of coffee has 80-90mg. Darker chocolate has more caffeine. So basically the chocolate can add up real quick.

It only makes sense that large quantities of caffeine would result in an underweight baby. After all, adults use caffeine for appetite suppression and weight loss.

I didn't drink coffee while pregnant, but occasionally had a Coke (I was really sick) or a piece of chocolate. And for what it's worth, my baby was over 9 pounds :woot:

        As always, moderation is key!

I usually have one cup of coffee in the car on the way to work...and if I am just totally dragging come mid afternoon, I will have a diet soda...Sometimes that's the only way for me to keep my head up.

Good news- our Quad 4 test came back, and no indication given for spina bifida, or Downs Syndrome. We find out the sex next week!
