  • World leaders hail Obama triumph

World leaders have hailed the election of Senator Barack Obama as the first black president of the United States.

UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown called Tuesday's poll historic and said he and Mr Obama "share many values".

Chinese President Hu Jintao said he looked forward to strengthening dialogue. France's Nicolas Sarkozy said the poll had raised "enormous hope".

Outgoing US President George W Bush said Mr Obama could count on "complete co-operation" during the transition.

The president-elect will take over the presidency in January.

I almost ran off the road this morning when I heard that China wasn't happy about the election. NPR interviewed some Chinese diplomat who said they are afraid that Obama may impose more treaties or bring more global attention to human rights violations in the country.....This guy also said they like dealing w/ Republicans more, since they don't really pay that much attention to things like that.

Its on TV constantly here, what gets boring is the fact they keep going on about his being the first black this, black that, black black black. I couldn't care if he was green but haven't heard much about his policys, lots about time for change but I'm not clear on exactly what the chances are gonna be yet

Good luck to him anyway he's come in at a tough time

Two of my biggest fears right there. He has been very public about his policies though. How much he will stick to them is my question. All politician lie to get elected, but he is coming in to an economy that is doing terribly and he is going to have to raise taxes. The question is on who? We can also say goodbye to the capital gains tax cut in 2010...heres to hoping my dad lasts until the next republican gets in there and cuts it again. :P

My biggest fear is that people will be so captivated by the fact that we have a black president that they forget that we have so much on the docket. If anything, this country has shown how blind it can be to reason when something (someone) shinny and new comes along.

I believe nobody is going to get lost on what real challenges are ahead for Obama, his staff, House, and the Senate. You will continue to hear that he's a Black man, Black American, etc., but that will take a back seat to our country's issues, domestic & global quickly, especially if there's no short-term successes for our citizens. No matter who was to attain the seat of President, this person was going to have a difficult couple of years regardless. NewbieChris, I agree with the shinny and new comment, but I believe the American people spoke loud and clear with the voting and for the first time in years we will pay attention and hold elected officials accountable, especially our new President.

I think he has more pressure not to fuck it up because he is black. He has to do better than an ok job or there pretty much will be no chance at having anything other than white man in office again. Fair? No. Reality? Yes.

agree 100 percent - i wouldnt want to be sitting in his skin in that office -- he has more pressure on him then any other president !!

if he fucks it up ? the adage see what happen when you vote a black guy in as president - shouldnt be that way but is what it is -

i will hold my judgement of him as you cannot judge a persons job performance untill that person is actually doing the job !! i am amazed on how many people have crystal balls

BOUNCER agree europe brother but those little fuckers in china still owe me :D

I respectfully dissagree, infact I'd go as far as to say he only got the job because he's black, he got the black vote from many who hadn't voted before. As far as his credentials for politics there barely seems to be any.

I doubt there is more pressure on him because he's black, if anyone dares criticise they'll be accused of racist biggotry.

listening to all the crap about how far blacks have come gets boring; Tiger Woods, Michael Jordon, Shaq, Will Smith, Lewis Hamilton the list of amazingly achieved blacks is easily as many as whites or any other ethnicity so to keep hearing those talking about how blacks have it harder to get places in life is pathetic. We al have the same chances in life as those aforementioned proved. I fact many jobs selections are pro black or ethnic which is actually racist against whites. There are no excuses but many try find excuses in life.

The news has been playing stuff about the first time blacks were given the right to vote and stuff about slavery. Obama's ancestors were slave keepers ans whites have been used as slaves also in the past but they don't go on and on and on about it.

If a native American had been voted president then I would see something rightous about it but for me its really no big deal that Obahma is black, its all about what he brings to the job, a job that will effect the whole world so we all have a stake even though we don't have the right to vote. I wish him luck and I really hope he does well but for me neither candidate was strong but one was black and thats why he won.

                    Fair no but reality? Yes.

I'm not sure how you are disagreeing with me... The point is, someone different got a chance. If it's not a positive memory it's going to be hard for someone other than a white man to get a chance again.

I agree with you. The man came out of nowhere and has very little experience. *Hopefully* he's got some good plans. I don't have anything against him personally, but I'm already tired of hearing about how we've made such strides because of his color. Who the hell cares what color he is, lets just get on with the job and what's really important here.

I don't believe he won because he is Black, I am sure there are many people that voted for him & against him because he is. I think he won because he carries himself very well, he is a great speaker, he has been very stable in all his campaigning from the very 1st moment he appeared, He is very likable & he clearly represents change that all of us are looking for. The fact that he is Black is a historic event so naturally it is going to be a huge subject of interest & discussion. When a woman is elected some day it will be the same thing because it is historic. If you think the man won just because he is Black then you not giving any consideration for the intelligence to the people that live hear in this country.

A woman president! even women wouldn't vote for that lol!

I think we all agree one thing, these are hard times and I wish him all the best for all our sakes. One thing I like about him, he works out, great example to set for the country, take time out and workout!:)
