I've had to put 2 dogs to sleep within the past 11 months. Its a horrible thing and I don't know what the right thing to do in this situation either. He might not be in pain yet, but you know its coming. On one hand, you want to give him as much time as possible, but why would you want him to know that pain at all?
Shib and FB are right though, they don't show their pain until the very end. I don't know if you remember the thread I made about my German Shepherd last January. He seemed fine, very healthy for a 12 year old dog. Then all of the sudden one day he got very very sick. We took him in and the ultrasounds showed he had cancer and a low platelet count that made him virtually unable to clot his blood. They told us he had anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. Just shocking because he seemed so normal up until those few days.
You have really got to ask yourselves why you are holding on, for the dog or for you. But just make sure whatever you do, you come to a consensus before you do it.
